Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced they’re lowering the price point of their PlayStation VR2 headset amidst reports sales are slumping.
The PlayStation-branded virtual reality headset is dropping its $549 price a decent amount to a new $399 price point (regionally €449.99 / £399.99 / ¥66,980), effective sometime in March 2025.
While the virtual reality successor headset was released two years ago in February 2023, its price point even at that time was considered steep for enthusiasts.
Competitors like Meta offered their own headsets for as low as $299, while also not requiring dedicated hardware like Sony does with the PlayStation 5. The latter barrier for entry also led to Sony embracing Windows PC support for PS VR2 in another attempt to spur up sales of the hardware.
Another factor that likely held up sales of the headset is that Sony decided to abandon the original PlayStation VR library, confirming there is no support for games from their original VR headset.
It’s worth noting both the standard PlayStation VR2 set and the Horizon Call of the Mountain-bundled PS VR2 set are now discounted to the price point, effectively giving the game for free.
