PlayStation Store to Discontinue Movie and TV Purchases and Rentals

PlayStation 5 VR

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) have announced the PlayStation Store will discontinue movie and TV purchases and rentals.

The PlayStation Blog post states as SIE have seen “tremendous growth from PlayStation fans using subscription-based and ad-based entertainment streaming services on our consoles,” the “shift in customer behavior” means movie and TV purchases and rentals will no longer be offered after August 31st.

After this, users can still access content they have already purchased on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and mobile devices.

The reason for this may be due to stiff competition from dedicated movie and TV show streaming services; which have gained a new lease of life from the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic and subsequent quarantine orders. Even so, the demand for console gaming has also risen, which may balance out any losses. Even so, the PlayStation 5 has had issues with shortages and scalpers.
