PlatinumGames’ “Platinum 4” Fifth Major Announcement Delayed to 2021

PlatinumGames 2021 Announcement

PlatinumGames have delayed the fifth part of their “Platinum 4” announcements to 2021, offering little in what it could be.

PlatinumGames had previously set up a teaser website in 2020 for four major announcements. The first three of these included the KickStarter for The Wonderful 101: RemasteredProject G.G. their first self-published game, and the opening of their new game studio in Tokyo along with the development of their own game engine.

Their fourth “announcement” was an April Fool’s joke, a fake teaser for a Sol Cresta arcade machinea faux sequel to the 1980 arcade game Moon Cresta, and 1985’s Terra Cresta. The website updated soon after to tease a fifth announcement, set for 2020.

Having come and gone- possibly hindered by lockdown orders due to the coronavirus pandemic- the website has updated to change that teaser date to “XX.XX.2021.” In a recent interview, PlatinumGames’ founder and director Hideki Kamiya stated that he hoped to reveal more information on unannounced projects in 2021, along with action game Bayonetta 3.

While the fifth announcement being Bayonetta 3 would make sense (essentially being a re-reveal), the project is likely to be held in high-regard by the studio for it to stand alongside The Wonderful 101: Remastered, and themselves becoming more independent. We may also see more information on Project G.G. in 2021.

In July 2020, PlatinumGames and Square Enix stated that progress on Babylon’s Fall was “continuing to progress well,” despite no news on the game that summer. As aforementioned the studio has also managed to venture into self-publishingopening PlatinumGames Tokyo, and building PlatinumEngine; all thanks to investment from Tencent Holdings.
