Planets³ (planets cubed) is quite possibly the closest thing we’ve gotten to a truly ambitious, online, multi-world version of Minecraft. Although many other developers are trying to put their own spin on the insanely popular formula, Planets³ is simply trying to take that block-y style and expand upon it, by quite a bit actually.
Think of the game as a mashup of Minecraft, Starbound, Skyrim, random dungeon crawlers, and with a slight dash of MMORPG elements. The entire universe within Planets³ is made up of 25cm³ blocks (voxels), and you’ll be able to eventually travel to other planets, galaxies, and maybe even universes.
You can check out their kickstarter pitch below:
This is seemingly the kind of game that myself, alongside many other Minecraft fans, have been waiting for. You know, a true sandbox that has excellent and rewarding gameplay mechanics and things to do, instead of simply being a pure sandbox for you to build things within.
There will be tons of jobs, recipes, and places for you to explore. If you get tired of the planet that you spawned on, eventually you can build your own personal spacecraft so that you can visit other planets, or other solar systems. Maybe you’ll be able to build your own fleet at some point as well, and dominate the universe?
While Planets³ has been up on Kickstarter for a little while now, they’ve already earned more than half their funding goal, which is $250,000 dollars. If you want to pledge to the Planets³ Kickstarter, head on over to their campaign page.
