Independent developer Phoenix Labs, the folks behind Dauntless and their more recent game Fae Farm, have announced they’ve laid off the majority of their staff.
The new layoffs are part of their “unfortunate but necessary” changes to overall operations, and a specific number of staff affected wasn’t mentioned.
It also remains to be seen what will happen to their currently-supported and aforementioned games Dauntless and Fae Farm, the former being a live-service game.
Most recently, Phoenix Labs attempted an essential reboot of their popular game Dauntless, although it has garnered overwhelmingly negative responses. The studio will share an update “in the coming weeks” on what to expect with the games.
Phoenix Labs previously laid off over a hundred staff in another difficult decision last year, which they announced alongside canceling all their upcoming and in-development projects to focus on the above two titles.
Here’s the full message from the team:
Today is another difficult day at Phoenix Labs. We have made the tough decision to part ways with the majority of the studio as part of unfortunate but necessary changes to our operations.
We recognize and deeply appreciate the contributions of every individual impacted. Their talent, dedication, and creativity have left an indelible mark on our company and our games.
We will share more details in the coming weeks about what this means for Dauntless and Fae Farm. For now, our focus is on supporting those affected through this transition.
To our industry peers, we encourage you to reach out to these exceptional individuals – they are some of the best in the business.
