Phantasy Star Universe Fan Server Being Made

Nothing stung worse to we Sega-loving Phantasy Star fans than the day Phantasy Star Online shut down. An enterprising group of players created a private server to keep the game alive but the next game in the series, Phantasy Star Universe, didn’t share that good fortune. Due, supposedly, to heavy encryption by Sega to avoid such a fan server being made again, PSU was said to be uncrackable and would never have the kind of player-run server that PSO has enjoyed.

Don’t get your hopes up, but it seems someone has begun attempting just that. Since about four months ago, a message board popped up that has been discussing work on a fan-made PSU server.

Those involved (and the few who seem to be testing it with them) post progress updates on the forum, and though they have a long way to go, it’s comforting to know that so many people still care about what is essentially the less attractive and younger sibling of Phantasy Star Online.

Apparently, this project was started as a private experiment between some friends, but as they began to chip away at it and saw that they could re-enable things, it went public, and has promised to one day return PSU‘s true online mode to a playable state.

It’s entirely likely we’ll see this server become open to the public before Sega ever mentions anything about Phantasy Star Online 2‘s American debut.

    I imagine it will probably suffer from the same problem that the official servers did. That everyone clusters together in one location grinding the same stage over and over instead of spreading out.

    I wanted to like PSU, but its ambition ultimately brought it down. PSO had a very simple lobby system, just join a block and visit the counter to see a list of all games open, ready to join no matter where the players are at. In PSU, they created several worlds to explore, breaking up the action stages between checkpoints and splintering each world into little zones. There was no unified room list to see every game in progress, so if you were in a less popular area (That is, anywhere but the forest), you were unlikely to see any games, nor have anyone drop into your game. Worse, when you completed one stage, you would move on to a mid-point and then have to make a whole new game to continue. So to have someone drop in, not only would you need them to be on the same planet as you, but they’d also have to be travelling in the same direction. Sadly, that didn’t happen very often.

    Maybe having friends to play it with would have solved that problem.

    I had quite a few friends that played with me, but after a couple years they left and I was all that remained of our group. After that, it was constant dragon runs with randoms. I did that for another year or two too. Ended up around level 114 I think.

    Was so sad to see it waste away to nothing.
