Sega has announced (via Game.Watch) the release date for Phantasy Star Online 2: Cloud on Nintendo Switch.
The upcoming Cloud-based version of the MMORPG will launch for the hybrid console sometime next spring. The Switch version will be free-to-play and have in-game microtransactions. Sega further detailed how the game’s cloud-functionality works.
Sega noted as the game will utilize a cloud server, meaning lengthy downloads and near-constant updates will not be required for the game. It will run at 30FPS and there might be lag pending your network environment. Despite running on the cloud, Sega still recommends a stable network.
It’s worth mentioning that the Switch version cannot play with versions outside the PC version, meaning no cross-play with the PlayStation versions. However, PC and Switch use the same Sega ID so you can go between both.
Phantasy Star Online 2 has been available for PC, PlayStation 4, and PS Vita in Japan – a western release has still yet to happen, but there are fan-translation patches for the PC version.
