Persona 5’s Fifth Character is Revealed as Yusuke Kitagawa

persona 5 09-20-15-1

We’ve learned (via Hachima Kikou) the identity of the fifth party member for Atlus’ Persona 5, via the usual Japanese magazine leaks.

While scans are currently unavailable, we know the character’s name is Yusuke Kitagawa (voiced by Tomokazu Sugita), and he uses the Goemon Persona.

He’s an honor student who is focused on an art class at Kosei Public High School. He’s also a stay-in pupil of the famous Japanese painter, who is known as Madarame.

We’re speculating here, but we think the blue-haired boy shown a bit more in the opening video with lyrics is probably Yusuke. There’s also the fact that he’s painting in the video, so make of it what you will.

We’ve also learned the Persona names of all four other characters:

  • Protagonist: Arsène
  • Ryuji: Captain Kidd
  • Morgana: Zoro
  • Anne: Carmen

Finally, there’s a bit of story details for the game. The main characters get into some trouble in the city as the group the “Phantom Thieves of Hearts.” The group is likened to a vigilante party that only targets “corrupt adults,” stealing away their “corrupt hearts” in order to better this world.

Individuals who get letters from the Phantom Thieves will sometimes even admit to their own misdeeds, and completely reform their lives.

Persona 5 is launching Summer 2016 in Japan, with the North American and European release coming sometime in 2016.

I was curious, then I saw Sugita and curiosity became full blown interest. If a game or anime had him playing every character, male and female it would be my choice for eternity, even if it was shit.

    But I can’t.

So the theme of the Personas is most definitely notable thief/vigilante type characters in various forms. Kidd was a famous pirate and Zoro should go without saying. Carmen isn’t recognizable to me, though. Do they mean Carmen Sandiego?

Yeah, there’s only 33.33% women revealed now going down from 50% since the last information dump.

Don’t want to see stereotypical, but he reminds me of Jun. Hope there’s a gay option in the game, since Kanji or Dojima never delivered the goods.

I don’t think it’s Carmen Sandiego… This Carmen is most likely a reference to the 1875 Opera, Carmen. In which the titular character is a gypsy woman who gets involved in a love triangle. Well, it’s a one-sided love triangle as the first guy she was with (and left) becomes increasingly jealous of guy #2. So much so that guy #1 kills Carmen at the end in a fit of jealousy. Carmen was very much a free spirited character with a love of freedom. In fact, she seduces Guy #1 in order to get free after she committed a crime (she attacked a woman with a knife).

You know, you may already know this opera without even realizing it. Or at least a song from it. The song “Toreador” came from this production. You may know the song from a few commercials or even as Freddy’s Music box jingle from Five Night’s at Freddy’s when he kills you. Also I think Loony Toons (Bugs Bunny) did a sketch on this opera once…

If you look at Anne’s Persona, she looks like she’s out of an opera production. That dress, the roses (Carmen throws a flower a Guy #1 after her Habanera song), and the heart box. Seriously, Anne’s Persona is absolutely gorgeous.

Also, I think Carmen Sandiego doesn’t quite fit. I mean, she may be a thief, but honestly, I think it’s a bit too modern of a reference with Zorro (1919), Arsene (1905), Captain Kidd (1701), and Goemon (1500s) being in this. The opera version of Carmen fits a little better in my opinion…

I agree Carmen Sandiego doesn’t necessarily fit. I just assumed the primary personas were all going with a thief motif, and Carmen S. is a decidedly American character which would fit with Anne’s probable heritage. In retrospect, it seems rather foolish of me to believe this is the case.

I suppose this Opera “Carmen” still fits the theme, as it seems she was apt at “Taking Hearts”.

Zoro was pretty much proto-Batman (skilled rich guy who pretends to be an idiot so no one suspects he’s the masked vigilante who operates out of a cave. There’s a reason Thomas and Martha are murdered outside a Zoro production in every modern telling of the origin) which gives me the very amusing mental image of someone with Batman as a Persona.

Actually, I think Hugo Danner of Gladiator may be public domain already. Maybe we’ll see him as someone’s Persona.

The opera was also adapted from an 1845 novella by the same name, so we still do have a strong literary motif going on. Actually upon further research, the opera isn’t necessarily the best fit either, but rather the novella in which Carmen is actually a thief and ran with a band of smugglers and eventual robbers. She was also married in that adaptation, but Don Jose (Guy #1 in my previous post) killed him in a knife fight and became her new husband. She then claimed that she loved him less after that, and she was then attracted to another man. Don Jose kind of snapped and pleaded with her to only love him and that they should run away and live an honest life in America. Carmen refused as she now hated the fact that she loved him and would never give in to him. Carmen knew he was destined to kill her because she picked up on certain signs (like a hare running between Jose’s horse’s legs), but she refused anyway because “Carmen will always be free.” Don Jose stabbed her death and turned himself in for her murder.

Oh, and both the play and novella are of French origin, and take place in Spain. So, there is still a foreign aspect to it.

You mean for Anne’s persona? In both of the previous games female characters have almost invariably had female Personae (Artemisia, Isis, Athena, and Lucia in P3, Sakuya, Himiko, and Tomoe in P4). The only exception was Naoto, and it doesn’t seem like Anne is going to have the gender insecurities that Naoto’s arc centered around, so I don’t think it would have made much sense to give Anne a male Persona.

Robin Hood would definitely fit in with the aesthetic, though, I’ll grant you that. Who knows, there might be other unannounced characters (or maybe he’ll be the Persona of an enemy character a la P3’s Strega).

I like persona (well, persona 4 at the very least) but I wish people didn’t focus on waifus so damn hard with the series.

why do you care what other people focus on ? Enjoy the game and let other people enjoy the game their way. For me interesting waifus are one of the main attractions of the series.

First it’s Zorro, not Zoro. Second I’d say precursor rather than “proto-batman” and this is from someone that loves Batman.

Also, wasn’t it some “Lone Ranger” knockoff that they said inspired Bruce?

Resist! If not for a “deluxe edition”, then at least for a review. It can have all the style in the world, but it don’t mean a thing if it can’t be backed up with solid gameplay.

Famous thieves/outlaws/vigilantes/etc definitely seems to be the theme with the character’s own personas. They’ll be the usual Personas of course, but I wonder if the extra ones you get through social links will be the other famous rouges. Blackbeard, Jesse James… Lupin?

Thanks for the info! Interesting read.

I don’t think the gameplay is going to be bad really. It might have some minor issues (with moving around, like stealth and the like) but it’s probably going to be solid turn based similar to Persona 3 and 4.

I’ve looked here on the chat and saw people talking about the personas and I think it’s interesting that a good deal of them are fictional chatacters. Another cool link they have is that they all die horrible deaths. It’s weird.
