Persona 5 Worldwide Sales Top 2 Million Units

Atlus has announced total worldwide sales for Persona 5 have topped 2 million units.

The new milestone was reached after the game initially launched in Japan for both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 back in September of 2016, followed by a western release in April of this year.

Persona 5 is now available for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. In case you missed it, you can find our thorough written and video review for Persona 5 here (we highly recommend it!).

Nice, now Atlas Sega bring it to PC.

If your game is good, your game will sell.

Both this and NieR:Automata are the best examples of this.

To nobody’s surprise, making it probably the best selling game in the series.
Only one that might have sold more is persona 4, and that’s lumping the ps2 and vita sales together.
And since p5 is still selling it’ll top even that.

I imagine the hardcore SMT fan base is seething at p5’s success.

But but EA told us single player games don’t sell anymore.

Great, it’s a fantastic game. Now remove the streaming restrictions, port it to PC and for fucks sake stop trying to DMCA the Patreon of the RPCS3 devs. It’s not their fault you’re too dense to see there’s demand on another platform.

    November 30, 2017 at 11:42 pm

welp, EA would never ever lie to us right? RIGHT?

No way P4 topped this. PS2 was beyond dated when that hit and the Vita always has been deader than my grandma.

I dunno bout that, pretty sure it sold well on the vita.
I know selling well on the vita doesn’t mean much, but for a while p4 golden was THE reason to get a vita.
I know it sold a hell of a lot more on the vita than the ps2, as baffling as that is with the absurd amount of ps2’s sold.

I imagine the old Persona fanbase isn’t happy about it either. New fans are usually obnoxious as hell, especially when their gateway to a series is the newest game released. Thankfully Atlus made a quality game though.

That said I’d be pissed off too. A spin-off series getting this much attention while the old, venerable series it was based off of is treated as if IT’S the spinoff? Its annoying and persona fans can be annoying little shits.

I wish. Sega doesn’t have the power here. Sony does with their brutal contracts. They would also be incredibly loath to give up one of their most powerful exclusives for their system.
    Goddamn though does it suck.

New EO. Persona 5. New console SMT game on the way. An updated re-release of one of the better SMT games coming out next year.

It’s just a really good fucking time to be an Atlus fan.

Cool, good thing its atlus and they weren’t expecting to move 5 million instantly.

Huh, woulda never guessed that. I think the main factor though is that this entry released on a current generation machine that was supremely popular at the time, which wasn’t the case with P4. Not to mention that there are a lot less exclusives around these days, which mean the few that do get a lot more attention (versus the sea of exclusives the PS2 had).

nah, they are too petty, they even tried to take down the ps3 emulator because it could run persona 5

Good on Atlus. P5 is a very stylish game that deserves its success.

This is great news. I have not gotten around to playing through the Persona series yet (one of my hugest sins), however, my friends brought over Persona 5 because they wanted me to try it, and it was fantastic from what I played of it. This game really deserves the success and praise.

Blame Atlus for releasing everything else SMT on the damn 3DS.
Had SMT IV been a proper console release i’m sure it would have drew more people in. It also doesn’t help that Persona somehow became Sony exclusive while SMT is now Nintendo exclusive further fanning the flames between the fans.

While I don’t think the cast or the story is better than P4 (come at me fanboys), the gameplay and combat is the best in the series to date

Thank you. Though I’d throw out Persona 3 from there. Well maybe they eventually went to it later, but most of the annoying new fan base started with P4Golden it seems.

On the one hand, casuals ruin shit and open the door for co-opting.
Except I’d argue Persona is the best example of doing a casual spin-off. It adds more, and tries to set itself apart from SMT in both name and style. Sure you have a rivalry, but no one feels like they’re being encroached on… As long as Atlus keeps making SMT games of good quality. But since P5 made so much money…

I hope they release a PC port. Based on their statements regarding RPCS3, it seemed like they are at least considering it; they said something along the lines of ‘nothing to announce yet’.

So, sounds like Sony is doing what Nintendo did 30 years ago, which is a shame as they should’ve learned from there mistakes, draconian contracts will cost you in the long run.

Eh. Let’s see how the new SMT performs on the Switch. I think if Atlus plays their cards right, SMT can start being a heavy hitter again. The fact that they decided to go with Nintendo (though I do worry about possible censorship/bullshit) is wise in terms of likely commercial success for their product.
