Persona 5 Gets New Trailer, Game Delayed to Summer 2016

Some mixed news was had at this year’s TGS with Persona 5.

Atlus dropped a 3 minute trailer for the game, the longest one yet, showing many new details, including your party members’ Personas, new locations, a better look at the open world, and a glimpse of what appears to be capturing Personas.

Sadly at the very end of the trailer, it said that the game would launch in Summer 2016, delaying the game by more than half a year.

No specific date was given, but we’ll keep you posted on when one arises.

It’s fine if it means making it better.

But I wish companies would hold off on prematurely announcing dates to avoid jerking around their customers.

Makes me hope this isn’t another Smash Bros Brawl where it got delayed like 3 times.

    Looks awesome. Like really awesome.

Is cat supposed to be able to change to random objects? I mean she keeps asking for a car and than she throws him… so aye… it looks as if the cat was able to change into things.

Delays happen – I doubt they felt it was premature when they announced it. Still, I think we all knew it was coming at this point.

I just hope they meet this one, at least.

Hoo boy, that’s a bit of a jump, huh?

Still looking forward to it. And hey, might actually have a PS4 by then, so maybe it’ll work out.

    I think it was…

They were saying it a few times that game will be released in 2015.

    I mean… search in google “Persona 5 2015”

and you will notice that even their official page has tag

    “Persona 5,coming 2015 for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4!”

So aye… I do think that it was bit premature when they announced it… but that’s just opinion.

Yeah. Delays do happen but it’s preventable at least in the eyes of the consumer.

This is very saddening news. Plus side game looks fucking gorgeous, so if it means polishing the game to a mirror shine then I’ll accept it. Now excuse me I need to go cry in a corner now.

I’m actually thankful for the delay. with Fallout 4, Star Fox, WWE 2k16, and Tales of Zestiria taking up the bulk of my gaming for the remainder of the year, this gives me a breather

That’s fine, as long as they tweak it and make it better.

    I’m torn.

Delaying the game isn’t necessarily bad. But the Persona fan in me is mad at Atlus and Persona team for not keeping things on the time table.

While it blows that it got delayed I personally never thought it was going to come out in 2015 to begin with regardless of what they said so I can’t say it surprises me.

As much as I like to complain about Persona stealing mainline’s spotlight, I’ll admit this looks quite good. It has some interesting setpieces, and I especially appreciate that it seems you capture your Personae rather than deal with Shuffle Time nonsense.

I’m not even that bummed by that, too many games already getting released till the end of the year, several of them are 50+ hour long (J)RPGs and I’m already wondering when I am supposed to play all that.

Enemies are classic SMT Demons, let’s hope ATLUS uses them for a new Raidou or SMT game. The story looks grimmer than 4, main characters seem more morally ambiguous. I really thought they lost their bite with 4. Soundtrack also seems a bit moodier. Let’s hope Mara is in the game and that it’s what Persona was intended to be. A more teenage focused version of SMT.

    >Delayed until Summer 2016

Ugh, this is like the second or third delay now. I’m glad they won’t rush it out, but I wish more companies would wait until they were almost certain it could be release by a specific date instead of saying, “coming soon” or a specific “year” in which it keeps getting pushed for a later date. It’s a tease how it starts out “2014”, then “2015”, and now “Summer 2016.” What sucks is by “Summer” they could release it in early or mid September since it’s “technically summer.”

    September 17, 2015 at 1:33 pm

Yeah, I know. That’s the trouble with these things.

It sounds like adding PS4 is what’s done it, at least from reading the interview they put out. Either optimization or keeping the PS3 version up to the optimization, maybe?

this looks more like a Yakuza game than Persona during the non-shadow hours

  30. TheCynicalReaper
    September 17, 2015 at 4:30 pm

Gameplay looks wonderfully varied! Though I really hope the game is holding its cards until release, because while some people complain about “Why are these games always making you face a deity at the end??” that’s because they all exist in realms greater than just that of people.
___An SMT game, even a spin-off like Persona, that doesn’t have you just dealing with society. It has you tackling the personified concepts of society, ideologies and theologies of all sorts colliding against you to either sway you or cripple you.

The idea this could actually end up being just “punk teens escaping brutal monotony and etc. of life and fighting the system [maaan!]” is awful and I hope there’s far more to it. I’d hope it would have more depth than P4’s surprise reveal but certainly it needs more than just “PERSONA the police!”

  31. TheCynicalReaper
    September 17, 2015 at 4:37 pm

I just say this because while the game looks like great fun and really exciting, it doesn’t have the same kind of atmosphere P4’s first trailers did (being kind of like “Persona-meets-Silent-Hill” as I recall) and is way more vibrant than P3’s trailers. Even the promo art for P3 was odd in that, despite the smiles, it had that brooding, warped Thanatos hanging around.

I’m just sick of anime. I want Shin Megami Tensei back, and not SMT”IV” (SMT4 was Strange Journey until otaku complained about the mainline title not taking place in Japan, then we got…that other thing). I want a game that’s fun but also alarming, carrying disturbing imagery and backstories, one which both tackles you and seductively entices you with drastically different philosophies. I want to feel unnerved again like I did in SMT: Nocturne and P3 (though P3 felt really “anime” to me, each new Persona title has felt more like something you’d watch in anime OVAs).
I miss SMT. I hope this game, if it can’t capture that, can at least kind of brush against that again.

    September 17, 2015 at 4:37 pm

I dunno about all that but I’m getting the PS4 version. Hoping for a framerate bump and a 1080p output. If we get all that maybe it’s excusable.

    Persona 3 trailer:
Notice that while it does have bits of humor in there and the music isn’t foreboding, the atmosphere of the trailer hinges on the mystery being presented. Sure the lines of desperation are typical of trailers and is present here, but the imagery is where the difference is jarring. Suicide, grim environment of coffins and blood, some guy melting, crucifixion– You get the idea.
Like them or not, these images are instantly arresting and tell you that this game will not be your typical JRPG fare. The mystery of this game isn’t just “dark”, but unnerving, and ultimately potentially frightening. The trailer is unsettling, and that’s what makes it so good.

  35. TeLin特林
    September 17, 2015 at 4:56 pm

I like how Bethesda did it…and while some say other companies couldnt get away with it…I feel Atlus could have especially since it is a numbered series like persona(or megatensmt for that matter.

Also…I’m better late 2016 or early 2017 for those of us that aren’t Japanese.

I can kinda give the Persona series a pass for having anime tropes since it was meant to appeal to a wider audience from the beginning. Although I think the series has lost its style of storytelling mainly due to original staff members leaving and veteran members sitting on the side to allow newcomers gain experience.

Since it’s originally a PS3 game they should be able to handle 1080p/60FPS on the PS4 version as long as they optimize properly.

  47. InfectedAI
    September 22, 2015 at 1:16 pm

No way. They’re already making a PS3 port and a translation. They’d be throwing away so much easy money. It would make no sense to do so.

It’s what I said about Sleeping Dogs and look how that turned out.
    Same with GTA V
    Or Journey

Just in general last gen ports do shit in the new ones out of laziness.

  49. InfectedAI
    September 22, 2015 at 1:28 pm

To be fair GTA V didn’t exactly run stellar to begin with. Maybe I should’ve specified games that ran well on old gen. Also I did say with ‘proper’ optimization. Haven’t see or heard anything about the Sleeping Dogs port. Shame to hear it wasn’t good. Really surprised to hear about Journey. You’d think that one wouldn’t be much of a challenge.

  50. Breezer
    September 22, 2015 at 1:42 pm

Yes you did. But proper optimization is a dying dinosaur nowadays. MGS V is the first game I’ve seen this gen with actual honest to heart optimization.
