Paper Mario: The Origami King Gameplay; Consumable Special Attacks, Coins for Time, and More!

Paper Mario: The Origami King

Nintendo have revealed more gameplay for during Paper Mario: The Origami King today’s Nintendo Treehouse Live.

The new gameplay gives us snippets of new information. In addition to the new information from recently revealed gameplay, we know the player can hold down the + button to constantly pour coins into the timer for extra time to solve the ring puzzle in battles. We also see enemies jump around the board at the start of battles, making it harder to work out how to solve the puzzle.

Mario can also spend up to 999 coins to have the Toads in the audience “Cheer” for him. This causes them to run to the edge of the stage, pelting foes with rocks, healing Mario, and partially solving the puzzle.

Failing to defeat all enemies in a round will cause them to attack Mario, then shuffle their positions again. Some enemies (a Mecha-Koopa) appear to run away after they perform their attack.

Players can also gather weapons for Mario, such as Iron Boots to stomp on spiky foes, or Shiny Boots and Hammers that deal more damage. These will “deplete after a while.” There does not seem to be an indicator on how many times the weapon can be used based on the battle UI.

Some rescued Toads will also open shops and services back in Toad Town when rescued; including an accessory shop, and the Battle Lab where players can practice timings for attacks in battles. There will also be collectible treasures.

During boss battles, players will need to line up the ring with an attacking panel next to the boss, or they will be unable to perform an attack. Performing attacks on bosses from different angles at different times during the battle will also be more advantageous.

When Toads Cheer during boss battles, they will show Mario’s path for one turn. Boss battles also can have hint envelopes, which when walked into will explain how to weaken the boss.

In both boss battles and on the field, the 1000-fold arms use the Joy-Con motion controls to move Mario’s hands into position, before pulling or pounding the area Mario’s hands are on.
