Otaku no Video is Getting an Official Bluray Release in the West

[Full Disclosure: I have financially supported Otaku no Video on Kickstarter]

AnimEigo has put up a Kickstarter for a bluray remaster of Gainax’s Otaku no Video, the hilarious and tongue-in-cheek OVA that parodied the studio’s own history, as well as what it meant to be an “otaku,” or a lover of anime.

The movie is a mash up of two main parts, the mockumentary series where real otaku are interviewed and the negative aspects of the fandom are showcased (albeit in an exaggerated manner), while the animated portions showcase friendship, camaraderie, and even hope for acceptance of otaku.

So what’s new with the bluray remaster? To celebrate the film’s 25th anniversary, the package actually comes with both the original “Otaku no Video 1982” OVA and its sequel, “Zoku Otaku no Video 1985”, both of which featuring Japanese audio and English subtitles.

AnimEigo is using the same HD transfer as the Japanese bluray release, however, they’re utilizing a BD50 transfer instead of the BD25 the Japanese used – providing a higher bitrate for a smoother experience. The physical bluray discs are not region-coded, so you can play them anywhere in the world.

You’ll also get access to an additional pair of subtitled commentary tracks (curated by noted anime historian SANO Toru) featuring INOUE Kikuko (voice actress), MURAHAMA Shoji (Animation Producer and the “cel thief” in ONV), YAMAGA Hiroyuki (Gainax President & Founding Member), and SATO Hiroki (Anime Producer, former manager of the General Products Tokyo store and the “garage kit otaku” in ONV).

The Kickstarter was half funded in roughly two hours – and it is well above it’s funding goal of $40,000, sitting at roughly $76,000 dollars currently. The original subtitled release was handled by AnimEigo as well, back in 1993 to be exact.

If you want to get yourself a copy, head on over to the Otaku no Video Kickstarter.
