Onoma studio (formerly Square Enix Montreal) shuts down 1 month after rebranding

Newly-rebranded Onoma studio (formerly Square Enix Montreal) has been closed down, merely a month after its rebrand.

The news was confirmed by CDE Entertainment (via GI.biz), an Embracer Group business group that oversaw Onoma and the other assets they acquired back in May 2022 from Square Enix.

The company said the closers are happening so they can focus on “its future production capacities on its flagship studios, Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal.”

Both Onoma studio and its QA team are being shut down, affecting roughly 200 people, though CDE said they’re looking to move staff to open positions within their PC and console projects elsewhere at the company.

“With the opportunity to form the 12th operative group within Embracer we have massive ambitions across Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal,” CDE director Phil Rogers said in a statement.

He added, “We see the growth opportunities centered around our premier franchises and AAA games. Closing publishing QA and our Onoma studio is a difficult decision and one that we’ve taken with great care and consideration. We greatly thank all those team members for their contributions over the years and hope to find proper placements for as many as possible.”

Originally launched back in 2011 as Square Enix Montreal to make AAA PC and console games, the studio eventually switched to mobile development. This saw them create mobile spinoffs for core IPs like Deus Ex Go, Hitman Go, and even Lara Croft Go.
