ONIMAI: I’m Now Your Sister is censored on Crunchyroll, but it’s not their fault

Onimai: I'm Now Your Sister

Put down your pitchforks, it’s not Crunchyroll’s fault. Eagle-eyed fans of the series ONIMAI: I’m Now Your Sister quickly noticed that the Crunchyroll simulcast differed from a version of the series that leaked before the official premiere.

The changes include two relatively tame scenes of her protagonist Mahiro putting on a bra and getting out of the bath as well as some audio from an erotic visual novel Mahiro was playing.

The changes seemed odd because plenty of more exposed fanservice was present throughout the series.

Anime fans were quick to blame Crunchyroll for the changes to the show but one YouTuber Otaku Spirit dug a little deeper.

According to a Taiwanese anime distributor, a censored version of the show was seemingly given to all distributors outside of Japan. This means the censorship came directly from the publisher or studio of ONIMAI: I’m Now Your Sister.

It’s not unreasonable to assume Crunchyroll might object to the content, after the company acquired online retailer Rightstuf they announced they would be phasing out “erotica” products.

But this isn’t the first time a producer or studio has censored a series for international release. Tokyo Revengers covered all instances of the Manji symbol out of fear it would be seen as a Nazi Swastika.

While it might be fair to wonder why Crunchyroll wasn’t forthcoming about the global version being censored, it’s also possible they didn’t know since they may simply work with what they’re given.

Regardless, the blame falls on one of the producers or Studio Bind themselves this time.

ONIMAI: I’m Now Your Sister is available to watch on Crunchyroll.
