While earlier this morning we learned that a consumer model for Oculus Rift is heading to retail some time in Q1 of 2016, we’ve also learned the headset might be coming to home consoles in the near future.
The news comes from Oculus VR vice president Nate Mitchell, who spoke at this year’s TechCrunch Disrupt (via Gamespot) conference in New York. Mitchell said that his company had already begun talks with Microsoft and Sony in regards to bringing the headset to Xbox One or Playstation 4.
“We have,” Mitchell replied when asked if their company had spoken with Microsoft and Sony. “We’ve talked to everyone. There’s a lot of people right now interested in the VR space. And we’ve said many times that we’re interested in bringing the Rift to as many consoles or platforms as possible. Ultimately, we haven’t announced any sort of partnerships to date. But it’s something we’re always exploring.”
The interviewer said that he would personally enjoy being able to use the Oculus Rift on his Playstation 4, to which Mitchell replied, “Anything is possible.” This is naturally up in the air, however, as Sony is launching their own VR headset, Project Morpheus, in the first half of 2016. Microsoft also has their HoloLens, which they seem equally invested in.
Mitchell did say that when the consumer version of Oculus ships next year, it will require a powerful PC. “You’re going to want a nice gaming rig,” he said. “We’re not talking about a high-end, crazy computer, but something that would run modern games well today.”
