Obsidian’s new medieval RPG, Pentiment, is only possible thanks to Xbox Game Pass

The latest RPG by Obsidian, Pentiment, has launched and is on Xbox Game Pass day one. What’s more, director Josh Sawyer said the game wouldn’t exist were it not for the service.

Speaking in a podcast with Waypoint Radio, Sawyer discussed how the game was made with Game Pass in mind and it never would’ve been a thing without it.

“I never would have proposed making Pentiment without Game Pass,” he said. “Like, I literally just wouldn’t have done it. I just don’t think it would have been possible.” He would also talk about the old style of large investments garnering large returns having an impact.

“[…] In this ecosystem. [Game Pass] is the only way in which I conceive of [Pentiment] being viable.” Sawyer continued.

Sawyer also remarked that the flexibility of the service allowed them to take some chances for a game such as this. He specifically noted how niche the style of the game is, where even with a small audience, as long as they enjoy it, he would be fine with that.

Pentiment is available now for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC (via Steam and Microsoft).
