Hello Games has announced [1, 2, 3] the launch of the Desolation update for No Man’s Sky.
After being teased with tweets over the last few days [1, 2] the 2.6 update is now live. As detailed on the official website, the update adds derelict freighters. Once the co-ordinates are obtained from a scrap vendor, players can loot the procedurally generated insides.
However, players will have to contend with haywire security AI, life support and gravity control being offline, and even the lights being off. Some freighters have even been overrun with hostile aliens. Players can also find ship logs and personal effects, culminating with the captain’s log to learn what happened to each freighter you find.
These freighters hold personalized unique items to add to your own freighter. You can find improvements to your capital ships’ warp drive, new fleet upgrades, additional inventory space in your capital ships’ cargo hold, and other permanent upgrades for your frigates.
Further, “freighter upgrades are no longer restricted to the technology inventory, and may be installed in the general freighter inventory.” Your Freighter storage boxes can be accessed from the inventory screen tabs, Teleport Modules can be built on freighters, and freighters may also be customized with new paint works.
In addition, multi-tool weapons have been re-balanced for “a focus on a faster-paced, more dynamic, and more satisfying combat experience.” Sentinels now have their health and weapons modified, and combat reinforcements will spawn in greater numbers.
While mining asteroids, you have a chance of finding an Anomaly Detection Beacon; which in turn can be spent to detect nearby anomalies for rewards.
The update also adds player titles for milestones, new Nexus missions, improved bloom and lens flares, adds volumetric light sources, weapon visuals improvements, and more.

No Man’s Sky is available on Windows PC (via GOG and Steam), PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
