While Nintendo finally unveiled their new Switch console yesterday morning, we still don’t know that much about the console.
The company has gone on to say they won’t reveal new info for the console until next year, however, a new interview has confirmed a potential deal-breaker for some fans: the console will not support Nintendo 3DS cartridges or Wii U discs.
The news comes via Famitsu, where a Nintendo representative flatly shot down the possibility of the console supporting either console’s media, saying it’s unable to read 3DS cartridges or Wii U discs, as the hardware is completely different.
It’s worth mentioning the interview didn’t cover digital playback like the Virtual Console, or a potential streaming service like PlayStation Now.
Finally, the interview did confirm the console will use a new form of cartridge, not discs. The Nintendo representative said further details for the cartridges and hardware will be revealed closer to the console’s launch next March.
