This year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo has come and gone, and while our new content from the show is still coming out, the nonstop debate over politics in video games continues.

News outlet The National managed to get a quick interview with Nintendo COO and president Reggie Fils-Aimé, who shot down the claim that Nintendo makes political statements in any of their games.

“Making political statements are for other people to do,” Reggie said. “We want people to smile and have fun when they play our games.”

Nintendo caught some flack from the expected armchair warriors, with the appearance of Mario wearing a sombrero and poncho, traditional Mexican garb, while also playing some mariachi music in the latest trailer for Super Mario Odyssey (featured above).
