Nintendo Has an Official Plan to Get a Cut from Youtubers

Nearly a year after Nintendo tried to aggressively force its way into the let’s play scene on Youtube, they’ve apparently done a completely about face in their stance with the growing trend of streaming various games on the video platform.

The Japanese branch of the company took to Twitter to announce that it wants to open a new “affiliate program” that would see revenue from ads shown on various let’s play videos on Youtube between Nintendo, Google, and the end user who is streaming the game in the first place.

So instead of just letting fans and gamers alike stream their games and make a living off of the process, they want to apparently open “several affiliate program” options for Youtubers, in which they would receive a portion of the advertising revenue from their videos.

A Nintendo of America representative had this to say via Kotaku, in regards to the announcement from Nintendo of Japan:

Nintendo has been permitting the use of Nintendo copyrighted material in videos on YouTube under appropriate circumstances. Advertisements may accompany those videos, and in keeping with previous policy that revenue is shared between YouTube and Nintendo. In addition, for those who wish to use the material more proactively, we are preparing an affiliate program in which a portion of the advertising profit is given to the creator. Details about this affiliate program will be announced in the future.

It’s still not clear how much of a cut Nintendo will get, how finalized this deal is, and what it could mean for the burgeoning let’s play movement on Youtube.

What do you guys think? Is Nintendo within their own right to get a cut of the profits earned by let’s players, or do let’s players have a right to all of the money (after Google’s cut of course) from their efforts?
