Nintendo Fires Controversial Employee Over Moonlighting a Second Job

allison rapp 03-30-16-1

Amidst a series of botched, controversial, and or censored game releases, Nintendo of America has made the decision to terminate a very controversial employee of theirs, Alison Rapp.

While many speculated her termination was from various internet campaigns to get her fired over her strange, controversial, and or pedophilia apologist opinions, it was actually over something a lot less interesting – breaking her contract.

In this case, Rapp was found moonlighting in a second job, which most professionals know can quickly get you in trouble on the grounds of it being a conflict of interest, especially if you’re doing it on company time.

Here’s Nintendo’s official response, via IGN:

“Alison Rapp was terminated due to violation of an internal company policy involving holding a second job in conflict with Nintendo’s corporate culture. Though Ms. Rapp’s termination follows her being the subject of criticism from certain groups via social media several weeks ago, the two are absolutely not related. Nintendo is a company committed to fostering inclusion and diversity in both our company and the broader video game industry and we firmly reject the harassment of individuals based on gender, race or personal beliefs. We wish Ms. Rapp well in her future endeavors.”

It remains to be seen what Ms. Rapp was actually doing on the side, and the manner in which she was conducting said job.

Following the public knowledge of her departure with the company, she posted a curious message:

“Fact is, feminist politics, sex, etc. ARE dangerous to companies bc that’s where we’ve let the industry go. It doesn’t have to be that way.”

We’re not sure what this means, but it goes against what most people are railing on, and whether this is related to her termination or something else entirely.

This is why I love you guys. Rather than immediately posting an article on the topic just to get quick clicks, you decide to wait for the story to develop and now look, it’s completely different from what clickbait sites like Kotaku pulled from their ass and what they previously interpreted it to be. It shows integrity.

Finally, we can make this non-#TorrentialDownpour related and non-#Gamergate related.

She’s useless to the localizations or its changes, so whoever is going for her is retarded.

Anyway, it’s great we have news sites that DON’T start posting immediately so they get clicks, but rather start waiting out for the facts.

Turns out she was fired for moonlighting as a gravure idol, including some nude shots. I don’t want to link directly to any of the photos, but here’s the KiA comment section and there are some imgur posts that have the shots:

Despite my intense dislike of her, I have to admit she’d probably do all right in front of a camera. She’s quite good-looking, I think.

Can’t say I’m surprised NoA took her to task over it, though. Even beyond the fact that she had a second job, remember what they removed from Fatal Frame?

To be fair, all pedo-apologists should be treated like societal threats, because they present themselves as inclined to include, associate with and thus likely cover for an actual pedophile.

TL;DR I’m glad for CFW because the idea that Nintendo would be inclusive to the point of harboring someone who remotely sympathizes with child rapists is quite disturbing.

Good job not blaming a hashtag that’s nothing more than a boogeyman these days.

You could say “but couldn’t this be just some cooked up stuff so Nintendo can wash their hands of her?”. Well, no. Nintendo is explicitly stating she violated company policy. If it isn’t true, she should be getting a lawyer immediately, because that would be defamation.

I can’t pretend to have kept up on this shitstorm (or to care) but from everything i’ve seen on quick internet searching it just comes across as a person saying and doing dumb things and getting fired from a public relations job as a result.

Doesn’t really strike me as any different than when the editor in chief of Gawker said and did dumb things while in court and it came back to bite him in the ass. Or anyone else really.

Wow I thought her second job reason for being fire was a convenient cover for Nitnendo but disregard everything, the job actually seems like it could have been a PR liability to Nintendo.
It was some cam girl deal.

Personally, I don’t care enough about any individual, what they think or do, if they deserve it or not, not my problem.
As far as I am concerned all the NOA sucks, so go ahead, get rid of all of them, GG, let’s start again fresh without all the censorship nonsense.

What’s funny now is that this will make it seem like “gamers” actually achieved something.
Did they? Would she have gotten fired anyway due to the camgirl job?
Or was the fact that she was now in the spotlight a contributing factor to her fate?

  25. EroBotan
    March 30, 2016 at 10:06 pm

Despite some info about her being a camgirl, i personally still think the cause is that magazine article (mirror i think?) & that woman from child organization. Nintendo ‘s statement is all safe & vague diplomatic stuff, all the companies do this when they get in trouble, this way they can wash their hands & stay out of this.

I don’t think GG has anything to do with this because nintendo of america is an SJW company, they won’t fire their own kind just because gamers demand it. Gamers are their enemies afterall.

She shit on customers who she didn’t agree with politically all the time. That’s not something a fucking PR rep for a company should be doing. NOA corporate was probably sniffing for a reason to ditch her already. She openly shit on and insulted consumers as a PR rep, and of course her pro-CP/Pedo stances which are incredibly well documented thanks to her own twitter. That’s not something a family friendly company wants to be connected to. Hell any company. She gave them a contract violation that let them fire her as clean as possible so they took it.

It sucks when someone loses a job, but when you foolishly come out with these potentially damaging comments out in the open and shit on your consumer base you’re just begging to be fired. On one hand, I don’t think any reasonable person thinks she should lose her job for what her opinion is.

On the other, she wasn’t exactly the nicest person in PR. And I would assume that PR people have to be able to at least pretend to be nice. Especially to people in their company’s target demographic (in Rapp’s case, gamers).

She had a very controversial opinion on child pornography. She equated it to lolicon and shotacon content (both of those do not involve real children in sexual situations). Her stance was that “consumption child pornography, lolicon, and shotacon media do not make real life child molesters and rapists”.

She used this logic to argue that “child pornography is safe to consume and should not be condemned”. Of course, the problem isn’t so much consuming it, it’s what’s required to create it.

Which in my opinion isn’t entirely wrong. Not every pedophile is a child molester and giving non-molesting pedophiles psychiatric help to get over the attraction is something I’m all for. Actual child molesters can rot of course.

The only thing I’m aware of from her paper that I take issue with is that she puts drawings on the same level as actual children which I consider to be bullshit since most lolicons/shotacons (for lack of a better distinguishing word) have no interest in actual children.

I wholeheartedly agree. As a gamer, I believe that violent video games don’t make me violent in real life. Therefore, I cannot say “consumption of child pornography makes child rapists and molesters” without some serious amount of double think.

My problem with the concept of child pornography is the creation of it.

Then, people dug up and found out about the pedo stuff to add to that.

Now that she was fired she claims harrassment from GG, blames GG for being fired, wants to make it about “I was harrassed and fired for being a woman in the gaming industry”, etc.

Right now there are 4 angles it seems

Her thesis, statements in support of pedophilia, with the wayne foundation condemning it, and people making it a public knowledge deal

There’s the gamer backlash against her due to her supposed involvement with the censorship (weakest angle of attack imo)

There’s her second job matter Nintendo says, and as a bonus it seems she did some camgirl stuff none the less

And finally there’s the angle the mainstream media will take, that she was fired because gamergate was so mean to her because she is a poor woman :( and gamers are such disgusting evil meanies. Which is of course, BS.

What led to her firing? Who knows, only nintendo.

As some others have said, it might be all of those, but the second job might be the only really solid reason they can fire her for without getting into trouble themselves for wrongful termination.

I’d put money on it that they’ve been aware of the other stuff and have discussed what they can do about it.

A web of stuff, aside from what people are explaining pretty well, she ended up becoming the first person who came to mind when someone was looking for a Nintendo representative involved with Treehouse.

She expressed herself being proud of a few projects like Fatal Frame 5 (not celebrating edits specifically) and has butted heads with people by claiming that they are harassing here just by responding you her for probably years by now. Naturally that propels a cycle of anons asking her questions, some not as polite and them being thrown into the harassment fire. She even searches for it herself on the net – not just people messaging her directly on Twitter: http://www.ign.com/boards/threads/presenter-at-the-nintendo-treehouse-event-posted-all-the-mean-things-people-said-about-her-today.454226227/

Can’t praise the comments she received and I’ll assume all of them exist for her sake, but does “dat qt butt :3” belong on the list? Same goes for “Well I hate her” which may be the most polite harassment to be given ever… No idea what sites these were on and that last one implies that even if it was in a comment section she is likely to see that it wasn’t a direct exchange with her.

Fair enough if she didn’t want to give what may be trolls in some cases attention, but without context. All of this could be live comments from a single stream, largely by a handful of people. No idea why she removed references to specific games.

(Social Justice like views don’t mix well with this, but that is a cherry on top of the whole thing)

Even Hideki Kamiya submits to the Nintendo Ninjas for everything he says. Perhaps, Nintendo have a stronger case if they can point out other things not that I think tattoos (and opinions on the net – as charged as rape is as a subject) should be that big.

Nintendo’s family friendly image should be tighter on their PR than it should on the games they release which are open to player expression and largely out of their hands when it comes to third party games or titles like Devil’s Third or Bayonetta 2.

  97. British_Otaku
    March 30, 2016 at 11:54 pm

I wish Nintendo and company picked up the slack so reporters can’t mix up things on developing stories like “What is left in the game?”. Bravely Second, Fire Emblem Fates, Fatal Frame 5, Xenoblade X, Azure Striker Gunvolt, Blade and Soul.

All of them are wild rides where we only really know what is gone when the game has been released usually, often when it has been out for months or longer.

The Nintendo statement does seem suspect. Perhaps, it is could be true (perhaps they don’t like what she was doing as a second job – or think it matches with their image). If it isn’t a defined rule in her contract that she can’t do that, I suppose she could sue and I wouldn’t mind that at all.

Even if I supported her losing her job (nope), it isn’t like I’d lose money watching more appropriate justice being sought out.

This single event has become more convoluted than it needed to be, because of everything than can be attributed to Rapp’s firing. Was it because of her pedophilia-defense thesis? Was it because of her moonlighting? Was it because she’s just an imbecile undeserving of her job? This one hasn’t changed their mind as far as I know:

This one changed their mind when Nintendo released their explanation:

Not a big loss in games if I was to think that way (Seriously – Monster Hunter Stories and Generations exist – Zero Escape 3 is real!), but the point is that even developers are having knee jerk reactions. Fortunately one of them is waiting for the story to develop now.

I’m still not sure why she became a target. She was anti-censorship in all her statements. And had nothing to do with this shit localization of Fire Emblem. The worst she can be blamed for is the word Spoopy for the Fatal Frame trailer.

The people who tried to get her fired were literally trying to fire one of their own. Pretty hallow victory if you ask me.

There’s rumors on Reddit that she may have leaked info to certain media outlets. If true, that explains why she got savagely sacked. Ninty is absolutely ruthless with that shit, and all the hoopla over her made them look a little closer at her private life… which could have exposed this stuff.

Well, her side job, as evidenced by certain Tweets (involving modeling a very NSFW nightie that was bought for her by a random person) was that of a cam girl.

Knowing Nintendo’s reputation as a very family-friendly company, it’s not surprising that being a camgirl would be against their company policy lol

    I’m rather mixed on this.

On the one hand, she seemed like a fairly cool person, being more free-spirited than NoA usually is, and some of her stances I agreed with such as keeping the boob slider in Xenoblade Chronicles X. I am sure she will land on her feet. The tattoo stuff is bullcrap that I hope changes, but I know that is how corporate culture is with clean-cut, professional appearances. Some of the things she pushed back against actually were reasonable, mostly getting the ability to stream like some of her coworkers.

On the other hand, her insulting consumers as well as tweeting mixing her personal and business account together are clear red flags that she is not a good fit for PR. Tweeting the stuff about CP is a HUGE no-no, especially for someone who works at a company who wants a family friendly image. Her tweeting about rape culture is something that should be left to a personal account, not when you interface with kids.

I think things are a lot more mixed than “One of their own”. I can’t disagree on her seeming to be the realm of anti-censorship (mondo cool), but I’d say that anyone who leans towards supporting paedophilia and lowering the age of consent is going to be noticed after we’ve seen a number of people get confirmed to be offenders.

More so, if she works for Nintendo/Treehouse and seems to be the most common face who engages with people. Since September 2014 at least she has been butting heads with people and collecting + reflecting the hostility she got.

Even more hollow of a “victory” if it gets blamed on them and Nintendo doesn’t learn (which seems to be a trend). At least if it was a man, people would focus on what she has said and done as a whole. >_>

Sometimes they mention things before that, but we never get details. It is up to us to discover things like Bayonetta missing dual audio in Smash Bros outside of Japan which had no answer or Bravely Second’s changes prior to hearing from them.

  200. C4
    March 31, 2016 at 2:32 pm

Bayo has a bit violence and sex but I don’t think it’s not family friendly in a broader sense. It’s not more than what you would watch with your kids on TV in terms of what some would consider as “problematic content”. They do seem to try to avoid it in their own 1st party games though unfortunately, but often it’s just not worth collateral damage when you look at things like people genuinely want the removed body part slider in Xenoblade X or people don’t want memes everywhere in localisations. Sometimes good intentions can go horribly wrong and that is what might have happened at NoA here and there. There’s definitely space for a Bayonetta and uncensored and unmemed localisations for a “family friendly” company. I hope Nintendo finds a better balance in the future cause right now stuff gets decided even against their own target audiences wishes.

  201. Brimfyre
    March 31, 2016 at 2:32 pm

I just saw someone else post a picture she posted on her account of her in a see through nightie, that a fan sent her and then she asked if people wanted to see her in more reveling stuff to send it to her and linked to her Amazon Wishlist. That should be case closed. That is more than enough reason for a company like Nintendo to say, “Thanks but no thanks”.

  202. British_Otaku
    March 31, 2016 at 2:47 pm

Nintendo has so few M-rated/D-rated/18-rated (interestingly enough Bayonetta 1 is 18+ but Bayonetta 2 is 16+) games that I mentioned it even if I’d definitely recommend Bayonetta in the same breath as Devil May Cry. And in the same breath as Ratchet and Clank (rated 3+ in the UK for the trilogy back in the day).

Fatal Frame is definitely further out there, but I let my bro play the demo. >_>

More on topic with what you were saying, yes, even if the Mario, Kirby and friends are lighter, there is definitely room for other games to shine. Nintendo would be cooler if they weren’t neutering their works, even some mature ones at times (well Fatal Frame is the only M one which comes to mind but I’ll use it).

    March 31, 2016 at 3:09 pm

Yea I guess in case of some of these games age rating and potential sales is more an issue than being overly family (kids) friendly. They probably don’t want mature rated games and what we saw were just leftovers from Nintendo’s plans to please a bit more of the “hardcore” audience.

16 rated and/or uncensored games like Bayonetta 2 are definitely okay and something Nintendo needs if they want to stay relevant.

When they are afraid of certain themes and replace them with memes or remove content or body sliders then I think they completely overreact and it will have a negative impact on the company in long term (and their sales are already low enough compared than last gen)

Ah yes. The game with the same composer as Saya no Uta. I actually forgot to put Mind/Zero in my wishlist and to track it down in general.

Fatal Frame and japanese survival horros in general are each own league in my opinion. Me personally started watching David Lynch movies since i was 13 (yes….), so that depends. I usually say how Silent Hill 2 is perfect game for teenagers but people buttheart at me after that as in their point of view when you say that game is for teens than it’s some “dumb action with big explosions and big breasted npcs”.. While it’s really an insulting generelization. I dont know how they teach students in schools/high schools in different countries, but usually they start giving pretty complex and deep books to teens starting from 14yo and up. Silent Hill 2, as i mentioned it already, is like some horror/surreal/freudianism version of S. Lem’s Solaris (if you havent read you may remember it for 2002’s movie..though some say USSR’s 197x movie is much better, and there was another movie before). So why am i saying that Silent Hill is perfect fit for young ladies and gentlemen? Judging from experience of me and my circles (i was heavy in fan communities those days) it’s in those age (15, 16 and further) when you percept very brightly and with much enthusiams such “deep complex plots full of symbolism”. Especially if you considered them psychologal dramas instead of just horrors (and even cried about tragedy of character’s situations). And while it depends on many people, in my opinion in your 20s and later you stop being such emotional etc. as you live your life and starting gaining more experience, real life experience; so the way media like literature/movies (hell, “Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind” was one of movies that rotated my mind in my midteen years)/videogames have less and less power of influence on your “yourself” because what they can give is overshadowed by you own life exp you starting to get; that’s why it’s good if you “built up” a certain base of good books/game/movie narratives in youth. Especially if after graduating from university all you gotta read is tutotials and other tech stuff you need for job; and – again, imho – you start more playing games for entertainment (more arcade, perhaps… Shmups? Racing? Fighting?) rather then looking for some ways to change yourself as you did earlier.

    April 1, 2016 at 6:18 pm

What do you mean “what about age of consent”?

I didnt read her paper, but as i understand it her argument was along the lines of age of consent being arbitrary, that cultures through out history have had lower ages of consent and managed just fine, and that the higher ages of consent being legislated around the world are due to pressures from prudish americans.

If you dont understand how consent matters to pornography then i really cant help you.

  239. Qmish
    April 1, 2016 at 6:21 pm

I mean that low age of consent doesnt advocate CP as there is no country where that age of consent is lower than a teen age.

  240. Hedger
    April 1, 2016 at 6:34 pm

she argues to lower those ages of consent using ancient cultures with consent ages as low as 10 as examples.

The end result being CP not being CP because the child could consent. It would simply be pornography.

The over all motive of the thesis was to decriminalize CP and minimize the stigma attached to pedophiles under the logic of pedophilia being a natural tendency and watching porn of that nature as way to harmlessly express or sate those urges. That people looking at pictures and video had an outlet and were not out preying on children. Of course the idea that someone has to make those materials in the first place was left out of the conversation.

  241. Qmish
    April 1, 2016 at 6:42 pm

Ah, ancient cultures… Sorry, i see.
Just all these holywars about japanese games censorhip etc starting insulting me as people starting calling you a pedo even if it’s about 17yo and you’re not that much older. They should go to wiki and learn this word https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ephebophilia at least instead of making late teens looking like maniacs who do shit to children.

“American puritans” thing you mentioned is overreaction to bikini outfits. Like, check random 16 yo’s instagram/facebook and it has plenty of photos from beach or aquapark often. Though of course there is difference between normal underwear/swimwear/whatever and some skimpy things they sell in sex shops etc.

Because she a woman the same batshit crazy logic SJWs & White Knights Oooo how dare you pick on defenceless women. Like pick on your own size never hear that phrase before.

Mundanematt said it the digging up her tweets & using that to get her fire hence whistle blower. Or blowers but the golden rule in a job is this if you have a personal opinions views that you believe in like criticism of treatment to fictional characters that SJWs are pushing leave your views at home not into work if your views have influence the decision to censored games that bad ethnics. & if your personal opinions say like rapp report & you bring your job in dispute you to get fired.

You correct yourself below when did she become a SJW femmist anti-censorship she said in-tweets that wants inclusive & progressive in games.

She made her case well know she also put drawing on the same footing as RL CP ones. The age of consent is 16 in UK but we hear teachers getting fired for having sex with a 16 year girl even if the girl got a crush & give consent so basically the whole consent laws is a joke.

The whole point what she wrote was about consent age around the world but her views on problematic content is well known if she was anti-censorship then she can have a say that the games Should not be censored instead she assaults the consumers that buy they games & to be fair ninty doesn’t come out of this clearly too why because ninty let the team censored the games, ninty also let the assaults carry on did they not read what she put till a whistle blower told them what she been doing.

I want to know what NoJ think of all this are they happen for NoE & NoA to be censoring they games, are they happy that she & others brought dispute to them NoJ they are staying silent. If I was them I would speak out & bang heads.

She had a whole string of tweets as well. While she may have come to her point of view by way of defending cultural relativism in Japanese media, it seemed that she took it too far.

My reading of it is people legitimately took issue with her questionable tweets, but because she was a woman and involved in video games, the bloggers decided she was being targeted by GG.

Thanks for making things more clear. Yeah at first i thought that she *just wrote that article about* but it ends up she really promoted it there ><

Right, we should treat everyone equally no matter who they sympathize with and promote.
—Who cares if you sympathize with pedophiles and promote pedophilia as normal? It’s, like, just an opinion and certainly doesn’t make you a potential threat to society.
—Who cares if you sympathize with dog rapists and promote bestiality as normal? It’s, like, just an opinion and certainly doesn’t make you a potential
    threat to society.
—Who cares if you sympathize with jihadis and promote jihad as normal? It’s, like, just an opinion and certainly doesn’t make you a potential threat to society.

It’s all just “weird opinion”, bro! What, are you some kind of FASCIST or something?! Don’t judge! DON’T JUDGE!

Regardless of my opinions on the woman herself. Can anyone tell me where I can get that Sailor moon shirt in a size L?

i hoped you would say what you think on that lengthy post of me (about whether you should allow play survival horrors at which age), as it was something i really thought about and not just posts about pantsu PR marketing

Sorry for the slow responses, I have a habit of being distracted and taking days to get back to things sometimes (at which point I don’t bother with dead arguments or boring subjects).

I’ll get to you in a moment.

I see. I haven’t really gotten into them yet (only has a good grasp of Revelations 1 through completion and RE4), but I am interested in the survival horror including some older games like Sweet Home.

The bro I mentioned is 12… >_> The only things I’m keeping him from is Berserk, but given what he has probably seen on the internet and that I let him go through Soul Eater and Dragon Ball. It won’t be long till I just let him. >_> As long as you are a decent human being (he isn’t, but he is okay), no harm done.

Silent Hill 2? I heard it was censored in the west as much as it gets a MASSIVE amount of acclaim, then Konami messed up the port for PS3. >_> Where will I start that series or Fatal Frame (if not 4 which is Japan only). All of that said, Silent Hill 2’s inspiration does sound interesting.

I guess Death Note or Monster (the anime series/manga) took that sort of psychological drama spot for a lot of my folks. If I must be honest, I played some stealth levels in games in my childhood and that put me off pursuing both horror and stealth for a while, though I should give the games a look again.

Did you actually read any of those articles?

Yes, and I feel filthy for doing so. I thank Christ I’m not so vile and willfully delusional as either the writer of the articles, the publisher exec who OK’d these articles, or the delusional fools who sympathize with the writer to the point of actually wanting to make pedophiles accepted in society as a “sexual identity”

It’s not about identity, jacktard. It’s about getting people therapy before they hurt kids instead of after.

Then it would be best to get them mental help (or, if they refuse, lock them up quick) instead of writing articles trying to normalize and empathize with evil
