Nintendo Boss: “We Know the Community Wants to See a Straight-up Metroid game”

metroid prime 06-24-15-1

When Nintendo announced Metroid Prime: Federation Force, many fans were disappointed at the game being essentially an upgraded port of Metroid Prime Hunters, a Nintendo DS game that launched back in 2006.

Despite this, it seems like Nintendo is definitely aware of the fact that fans want a proper Metroid game, one that harkens back to the Metroid Prime series, or maybe even a new take on the metroidvania flavor that pleased so many fans years prior.

We’ve learned (via Kotaku) that not only is Nintendo aware of fans’ demands for a new Metroid, we might be seeing an announcement for it soon: When asked if Nintendo proper knows that fans still want a Samus Aran-focused adventure, Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime said “Absolutely.”

After being pressed a bit, he elaborated:

“Look, we know that the fans want a straight Samus Aran game. We also know that the best way to launch a game like that is to surprise and delight them, to give them a launch date, in an environment like this let them play it vs. what other companies do which is to announce a project that you may not see for five, six years. It’s just not the way we do things. We know the community wants to see a straight-up Metroid game. We know it.”

So what do you guys think – would you like to see a new, proper, Metroid game starring Samus Aran?

They say this, but it’s been five years since the last metroid game, eight since the last release that didn’t make people throw up and over a decade since the last 2d game which is just a remake of the first game.

What they really want to say but can’t is: “We know, and we don’t care.”

What we want is a new Metroid Prime, or at least one made by Retro. It still baffles me why Nintendo decided to claim Prime was not canon. It was the most gracefull transition to 3D any series had IMO

Not really a fan of the Prime series but would absolutely love a continuation of the main series. I know they’ve kind of painted themselves into a corner but with everyone else making new Metroid-like games EXCEPT Nintendo its getting a little embarrassing.

I really would have enjoyed a similar 3DS follow up to Prime Hunters but Federation Force definitely isn’t it. Baffles me that there wasn’t a core Prime title in the works for Wii U. You’d think that Nintendo would realize that the series would sell some consoles.

One of the big reasons people are pissed about Federation Force is because, as far as they know, it’s all Metroid as a series has gotten for five years and all it will get for another five.

If you’ve got another one in the works then go ahead, be like those other companies, let the fans know it exists. Maybe they wouldn’t be going on an anger-fueled rampage against your other titles then.

I’d go for another Prime game if they took advantage of the fact that they finally have a controller with 2 sticks, ditch the lock-on system and make it so you aim manually. Combat was Prime’s weakest aspect by a huge margin

a real metroid game that followed the franchise’s staples of shooting exploring and upgrading gameplay without watering down the gameplay and its difficulty or adding a bad convoluted plotwould be great, either a 2D game or a 3D game like Retro’s or even something new like third person 3D or a hybrid like sonic generations, and even the idea of adding some element of multiplayer wouldn’t have been so bad if it had been pulled off in a good way, but Nintendo is still decades behind on multiplayer

and of course they know what fans want
but since when has nintendo actually cared about that?
if it wasn’t for the old money they got from the DS and Wii in the bank, or the plastic toy influx of money, they would be in a very dire situation lately

they’re already hinting at a new console with a focus on being cheaper and having something revolutionary

they just don’t care about the fans at all

I don’t even think the Metroid franchise needs Samus (she’s great, really). There are design elements to the early games that can be used within the setting and give us a new look on a familiar universe. But yeah, we want to see Samus back. Frankly, I’d like to see the Metroid Prime 1 Samus.

  27. Fenrir007
    June 24, 2015 at 9:53 pm

Hell yeah I want. I would be fine with a continuation of Prime or even a new plataformer (that distances itself from Other Merde), but I would also welcome something that really played to her bounty hunter fame and had her looking all over the galaxies for bounties, maybe in a Mass Effect style (not necessarily in a third person view – I would prefer a 1st person thing). The DS game was kinda like that.

  28. Fenrir007
    June 24, 2015 at 9:54 pm

I think Nintendo is allergic to the whole “expanding the game universe” thing. Just look at the Federation, we barely know anything about them. If it wasn’t for the gamecube games, we would know even less.

GIven how people treat Other M…i wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo is extremely cautious about how the next mainline game will be made…but, that doesn’t matter right? It’s Nintendo’s fault and they hate metroid and hate the fans and blah blah blah we’re borderlining sonic fanbase idiocy.

Funny how people still blame Team Ninja for Other M when the game was penned and directed by Yoshio Sakamoto. He even took responsibility for the game’s shortcomings.

  40. Crizzyeyes
    June 25, 2015 at 7:43 am

Then they’re more retarded than I give them credit for. They took a risk by changing up how the game is developed a lot, and it backfired. Hopefully businessmen of their pedigree realize that doesn’t mean the entire brand is worthless now, outside of piggybacking. In fact it’s literally the opposite, there is a group of people angry at Nintendo because they won’t let them give Nintendo money.

Sorry Biodrone tier retard, it’s not the fans’ fault that Nintendo produced a shitty game.

It’s same shit they did with Overlord: fellowship of evil. Nobody fucking wanted it.

But shitty developers think that when they will use “magic words” everyone will jump into buying their games. They are morons that they are not aware that by doing shady things like that they demage their good reputation A LOT.

  43. Malcolm_Ecks

  44. 2501
    June 25, 2015 at 11:26 am

The gameplay wasn’t that bad… for the most part. It was very fluid and captured the Metroid flavor quiet well. It’s a shame that the gameplay is so overshadowed by the retarded plot that people fail to see traces of a good game being there.

If Sakamoto focused more on area exploration and a minimal approach to cinematics, Other M would’ve been grand.

People treated Other M like crap because it WAS crap. It was neither a 2D Metroidvania game nor a FPS like Metroid Prime. The message was stop taking the series into new terrible directions like shitty voice acted Samus and make something good that people like. Nintendo is apparently dumbfounded as to how to do this, somehow.

  49. Thanatos2k
    June 25, 2015 at 4:44 pm

Hence why people weren’t angry about Hyrule Warriors, because Nintendo already said they were working on a real Zelda game.

Nintendo *isn’t* working on a real Metroid game, and appears to have no idea what a real Metroid game is anymore! Couple that with the last Metroid game being the travesty named Other M and there’s no faith they’re going to produce a good Metroid game this GENERATION.

    June 25, 2015 at 9:15 pm

“biodrone tier retard” haha..that’s a new one. 1 point for creativity. No need to get hostile. I get pissed at nintendo for alot of similar things myself, but i don’t get into the absurd lengths of freakout alot of people seem to be doing in regards to Metroid.

I like Other M. Yeah it had some very bad decisions (first person controls could of EASILY been reworked to act like Prime’s) but it had good ones too. The 3rd person action worked well, with some fine tuning and more of that good level design most Metroids have, it’d be solid.

Storywise I understood everything going on, especially with Samus and Adam…but i don’t expect (in fact it’s already clear as day by now) everyone doesn’t get their relationship and levels of respect. The Ridley Freakout, while understandable, is definitely the weakest part since (by that time chronologically) Samus had fought him several times with no issue..then again, that could also be a thing left out due to how not story-intensive Metroid was up until Fusion came out…either way, big mess up still.

But that’s me..and i tend to enjoy games people don’t; and if I were Nintendo, looking at how people get with certain franchises, especially after one entry “dun fucked up”…I’d rather ensure the next major entry succeeds with fans than shove something out on demand lest having to disappoint them worse than making them wait longer. Which is worse… angry mob from waiting…angry mob for “ruining the franchise again”.

Ya’ll need to chill out and stop complaining…i’d wager some day nintendo might say “fuck it” and kill everything Capcom-style. Then no one gets Metroid..or anything.

But that’s a super worst case scenario and likely wont happen…knock on wood.

  53. ChazDragoon
    June 25, 2015 at 9:38 pm

Reasons for Samus Limiting her Arsenal:
1: The mission on the station was Adam and his Team’s…therefore falling under Military Command. Samus is a Bounty Hunter and also relies/works with the Federation for repairs (shown in Other M/Fusion), Help (Fusion), Weapons (Her missiles are not Chozo Tech) and maybe more…fucking with the Federation Military will make her #1 on the most wanted list, especially with her immense (known) power. TL:DR — Screwing with the Military = Bad for Samus

2: Samus and Adam’s (not romantic) relationship. Even though they split ways due to difference of opinion, Samus still holds respect for Adam from their time together in the Military…think of it in terms of Student/Master.

3: Samus is a damn powerhouse…this isn’t even speculation, it’s fact. Samus holds some of the most powerful weapons and technology in the galaxy…so much the Feds and Space Pirates try to copy (and fail miserably) the tech. Point being, the crew is actually at risk if Samus goes full tilt with the weaponry. (Though the non-combat upgrades…yeah, there’s no good reason for that one.)

Mix it together, Samus, for all intents and purposes, is “working under Adam’s command”. It is -his- mission initially and he also needs to look out for his team, Samus understands that and coupled by the fact the team are her old military pals as well, she’ll play by the rules again to help them out on the mission. By all means she CAN just say “screw you” to doing that, but that makes her public enemy #1 in regards to pissing off the federation and also, she’s not a bitch.

But that’s what I saw in regards to that bit of story… *shrug*

  54. AnonDog
    June 26, 2015 at 2:30 am

To address your first point, military jurisdiction means jack shit to a bounty hunter. She’s not part of the federation anymore, she’s a solo agent. Even if she was hired, she wasn’t hired to work under Adam. She only did it because the writing sucked. Samus worked with the Federation in prime 3 if I recall and she worked “with” them not “for” them.

Do you really think her going about her business and helping them as a partner, not a soldier would have made the entire government hate her? The most capable and intelligent bounty hunter they probably employ? Nah, the whole team on that station sucked and Samus did most of the fucking work.

Also, be my guest and try to explain why she also cowered in fear of Ridley whom she had met and KILLED(or thought to have) multiple times before then since it took place after all 3 primes and super Metroid/Fusion. Prime1/3 has Ridley and so does Fusion, albeit an imitation.

  55. AnonDog
    June 26, 2015 at 2:31 am

I blame everyone involved, but considering that it was TN’s first Metroid game and it sucked badly then, yes, I’m going to attribute a large part of the blame to them.

Anyone else that had worked on Metroid in the past and made a non-shit game should have known better and they aren’t exempt from being a stupid fuck either.
