Nintendo is preparing a revised version of the Switch 2 for Europe, and the biggest change could be good news for anyone who cares about repairs and long-term hardware support.
The company has confirmed that future European Switch 2 units will feature a user-replaceable battery in order to comply with new European Union regulations set to take effect on February 18, 2027. Under the new rules, portable electronic devices must allow consumers to remove and replace batteries without needing specialized tools or complicated repair procedures.
Current Switch 2 models use batteries that require a more involved disassembly process, including dealing with adhesives. The upcoming European revision will introduce new model numbers and an additional “OSM” designation on packaging to help distinguish the updated hardware from existing versions.
The changes aren’t expected to stop with the console itself. Reports indicate that Nintendo is also preparing updated versions of the Joy-Con 2 controllers and potentially the Pro Controller to meet the same requirements.
For now, Nintendo has only confirmed the revised hardware for Europe. However, since the Switch 2 remains region-free, and some players outside the EU are already discussing importing the more repair-friendly version once it becomes available.
The exact release date for these updated models hasn’t been announced yet, but Nintendo will need them on store shelves before the EU deadline arrives in 2027.
