Nintendo and Niantic Announce Pikmin App, Launches in 2021

Pikmin Niantic App

Pokemon Go developer Niantic and Nintendo have announced a Pikmin based AR app for mobile devices.

Details are scant at this time, with a single tweet by Nintendo stating “What would it be like to have a more fun walking experience surrounded by #Pikmin?” The app is set to release in 2021, and pre-registration is available here.

Based on the accompanying image, the text, and Niantic Labs’ work on Pokemon Go, it is more than likely the app will utilize AR (augmented reality) to project Pikmin into the real world via the mobile device’s camera. At minimum, it seems likely users will be able to snap pictures with Pikmin they find, but anything beyond that would be pure speculation.

The last major Pikmin game was Pikmin 3 Deluxe in October 2020 for the Nintendo Switch. In case you missed it, you can find our review here (we recommend it!)
