You read that headline right. Nightmare Busters is a game that was cancelled back in 1994, only to resurface on a development cartridge in 2007, exciting both Super Nintendo enthusiasts and fans who were expecting the game all those years ago. If you’re wondering how the game was finished and released – a team of devoted retro enthusiasts at Super Fighter Team actually got permission to finish the game and release it.
Nightmare Busters is a game that features two leprechauns who are fighting the evil Tyrant, a monster who has figured out a way to enter children’s dreams. Despite the decidedly Western art style attributed to the pixelated characters, environments and enemies, the game plays like a classic Japanese run and gun shooter – something like the Contra series or Gunstar Heroes. You have to press the Y button to shoot playing cards at your enemies, and the game doesn’t go much further than that.
One of the coolest things about this finalized release is that the game is actually available on a physical Super Nintendo cart, complete with a manual and a nifty box – all of which will make any fan of the Super Nintendo squeal with glee. You can buy the game here for $70 (plus shipping and handling), while another company, Piko Interactive, has several retro carts for purchase at a fraction of the price. Despite the high cost of Nightmare Busters, the novelty of having a totally unfinished game finally available now is definitely intriguing.
