NieR Re[in]carnation Closed Beta Trailer, Turn-Based JRPG Combat Shown

NieR Re[in]carnation

Square Enix have released a new gameplay trailer for NieR Re[in]carnation, possibly confirming the game is a turn-based RPG.

The new trailer reveals what seems to be turn-based RPG combat, with the main character and two others fighting against hulking shadowy humanoid creatures. These enemies come in waves, based on the UI in the trailer. The enemies will have elemental weaknesses, and characters can launch attacks quickly after each other.

We also see the ghost-like creature floating behind the main character- called “Mama”- seemingly replaced by a teddy bear with a skeleton pattern in some scenes. This may be another creature entirely, or a costume for it.

For a few frames at 0:55, we see another floating creature behind another character. It seems to share the same shape as the other teddy bear, but white with a shiny blue tail. It is possible these floating creatures act like gear; bestowing new abilities and skills to the characters.

Another curiosity is the girl with pig-tails we see running around in the overworld may not be the same character we see in battle. The latter has her hair down, and is wearing a black leotard-like costume with thigh-high boots (as oppose to a dress and shoes).

There are also 2D segments where characters appear as silhouettes with white clothing. These could be anything from memories or a character re-telling a story to another, or how the world appears in some areas or scenes of the game.

You can find the closed beta promotional movie trailer below.

NieR Re[in]carnation is coming soon to Android, and iOS in Japan. The game will enter closed beta in July 29th to August 5th.
