If the title gave you pause, it should as the Budokai Tenkaichi series hasn’t seen an entry in roughly 16 years. But here we are, with a fourth game in our hands.
Dragon Ball fans were blessed with the PS2 era as they were a fantastic way to relive the anime’s story. But fans moved on as newer titles released with more impressive graphics and more polished gameplay.
Not all fans though, as the Latin-American community refuses to let the Budokai Tenkaichi series die, not only making content for the games but also modding them to where they could be considered a sequel.
Fans like Kinnikuchu have worked on mods for the series since 2006, and currently host more than 250 characters and stages for the game on their site.
The Budokai Tenkaichi 4 team, however, sets out to modify the game as seriously as possible, with no joke characters or fan canon.
The team sets out to completely update the game to modern times, adapting current story arcs with their own custom battles and cutscenes, which feature original voice acting from the anime.
The lines get completely blurred when it comes to spotting the custom content, as the added characters feel like they are native to the game, even featuring custom pre-battle interactions:
Even the Xenoverse series of games get some love in the Time Nest mode, where players run missions for Trunks and Chronoa.
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 4 currently covers the entirety of Dragon Ball Super, stopping just before the Dragon Ball: Super Hero movie.
The game currently runs both on PlayStation 2 emulators and real hardware, as well as PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 consoles with custom firmware.
The game can be downloaded here, and has options for both English and Spanish versions.
