Niche Spotlight – Cerebrawl: Indie 2D Fighter Brimming With Style and Promise

This is Niche Spotlight. In this column, we regularly introduce new games to our fans, so please leave feedback and let us know if there’s a game you want us to cover!

Zero Dimension is a small independent studio made up of passionate fighting game fans, and they’re working on their very own 2D fighter that could give the veteran franchises a run for their money.

Titled simply Cerebrawl, the new 2D fighter boasts hand-drawn visuals+animations, and tight gameplay. Featured above, you can view some gameplay of the latest build the game is running in.

Cerebrawl is described as a 2-versus-2 tag-team fighting game for PC, and its being developed completely independently, via fan donations and purchasing early copies of the game. For now, the game is in a prototype phase, and has the current features implemented:

  • 2v2 4-player gameplay
  • 80% of Helen
  • All of Helen’s normals
  • Special attacks
  • Level 1 super attack
  • All attack animations are colored, shaded and in their final state
  • Super meter
  • Assist meter
  • Hard tagging
  • Assists

One of the standout features in any good fighting game is an addictive soundtrack, and boy does Cerebrawl have an awesome soundtrack already, via DJ and composer 2 Mello. You can get a listen below:

While you can play with one or two players in training, you can also play with up to four players in competitive mode. There’s a whole host of features planned, including: throws, air-dashing, command normals, wall slams and ground bounces, 7 or more new characters, online play, stage breaks, and 1v1 or 1v2 modes.

If you want to buy into the game and support its development, head on over to their official website (or itch.io) and pick your level of purchase.

If you’re a developer and want your game showcased on Niche Spotlight, please contact us!

For what it’s worth, I enjoy Skullgirls for the most part, but that’s because I have friends to play local multiplayer games with and am shit enough at fighting games to not try and master infinite combos.

Removing some panty shots on the pretense of “we’ve grown more mature” is still dumb, but it’s still a decent game for casuals.

I backed this game and made fun of Mike Z on their discord and they kicked me out and refunded my money. It was hysterical.

if i remember correctly you wern’t just making fun of Mike Z [Honestly everyone was fine with that.] you were going around acting like a huge jerk to everyone, even to the devs. So yeah, that’s kinda the reason why you were kicked out and refunded.

oh and and you have a history of starting shit on SRK forums too. Not exactly a shining example of a good community member are yah?

Looks really, really clunky. I’m no expert, but at the very least, I think they need to look into hitstop or something, because as it stands, absolutely nothing seems to have any ‘oomph’ to it.

Funny, I don’t recall starting any shit with the devs. It was solely that comment about Mike Z that got me kicked. I barely even talked before that, I made one appearance in an animator stream where they brought up Skullgirls and I said I didnt like it, and that was about it.

I only post honest opinions on SRK, whether that’s seen by people like you as “starting shit” isn’t my problem. In any case, I’m not terribly upset about it, and I still wish these guys well and hope their game succeeds, even if they were assholes to me.

“Speaking your mind” (as I’m sure all you were doing when you posted your honest opinions) is more often than not a euphemism for being a prick. Just saying.

What an idiotic way of looking at things. Oh well, I guess this random internet person thinks I’m a prick then. Whatever.
