Today’s Niche Games Spotlight is Death Trash, an open world cyberpunk RPG that drops players into a wasteland that has been invaded by a mysterious meat hivemind.
Death Trash is an extremely bleak view of a cyberpunk world, where people can augment themselves and use energy weapons, but still live in huts and underground bunkers.
The game starts off with our created character getting kicked out of a private community due to being infected with something. The androids responsible for the facility give the player a brief training course as preparation for the outside, and it serves as our tutorial.
The map opens up a little more once we go outside, and find a giant kraken made of meat, who apparently wants some friends.
You have quests and a general plot structure in the game, but Death Trash is definitely a “gameplay first” sort of title, and feels like an updated version of a classic Fallout game, even down to some of the body horror.
There are red piles of meat basically everywhere, as it seemingly sprouts naturally from the land, with nobody knowing when it started.
Death Trash has real-time combat and lets the player use melee and ranged weapons, as well as powers that increase your corruption level.
Meat in the world of Death Trash is contaminated, but also extremely necessary to use because it’s a healing item, so the player constantly needs to manage their corruption gauge.
One of the game’s main mechanics comes from puking, it’s the main way to decrease your corruption level, and you can also pick up your vomit to fuel some machinery.
Death Trash doesn’t have only grossness and shock factor going for it, though, it is as a really competent and challenging cyberpunk RPG, it just happens that its version of the future is disgusting.
