We entered into fall last month with some big games release during the month of September. However we’re only just getting into the holiday season with the start of October and the festivities for Halloween and horror. Of course, some jump the gun and already begin talks of Christmas as well.
This month sees the release of some of the biggest games by all three of the console publishers. No matter who you are, there’s likely one game coming out that you’ve been waiting for and another new favorite might just be on this list.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage
The Assassin’s Creed franchise returns with Mirage, which takes the series into the middle east during the ninth-century.
The story follows Basim, a street thief who finds himself mixed in with the secret organization known as the “Hidden Ones” where he’ll turn in a master assassin to change his fate.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage will release on October 5th for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, iOS, Amazon Luna, and PC (via Epic Games Store and Ubisoft Connect).
Front Mission 2: Remake
The classic mech tactical RPG Front Mission 2 gets remade with enhanced graphics and improved gameplay features. The story takes place 12 years after the original where a new conflict arises when the Alordesh rebels against the O.C.U.
Players will follow three different characters through the battle which shares perspectives on all sides of the conflict. All the while leading troops in battle in a game releasing outside of Japan for the first time ever.
Front Mission 2: Remake releases on October 5th exclusively for Nintendo Switch.
Wargroove 2
Wargroove 2 is set three years after the events of the previous game. While the heroes were able to enjoy peace after their victory, a new evil returns to threatens all they hold dear with the use of forbidden technologies.
Following three intertwining campaigns, players will use new mechanics such as the inclusion of a new nation of mouse-folk, and a “Groove System” to increase their odds of victory.
Wargroove 2 is set to launch on October 5th for Nintendo Switch and PC (via Steam).
Sword Art Online: Last Recollection
Sword Art Online: Last Recollection is a celebration of the 10th anniversary for the anime based on the same name. It features the largest roster ever among games in the franchise with many favorites making an appearance.
The plot is based upon the anime’s War of the Underworld arc with a brand new storyline that changes the events to give fans of the show a fresh new experience for something familiar.
Sword Art Online: Last Recollection launches on October 6th for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via Steam).
Detective Pikachu Returns
The mystery-solving pokemon is back with Detective Pikachu Returns. There are more mysteries to solve for the titular character alongside his partner Tim Goodman in Ryme City.
The duo don’t have to go about it alone either. In this new entry, they’ll team up with other pokemon such as Growlithe, Luxray, and many more that’ll aid in their attempts by revealing new clues and pathways as they learn the truth on what’s going down in Ryme City.
Detective Pikachu Returns launches exclusively for Nintendo Switch on October 6th.
Forza Motorsport
The eighth entry in the long-running Forza Motorsport franchise, Forza Motorsport drops the numbering with this new entry that’s been long awaited for fans ever since the previous title was delisted.
This new installment brings about a brand new Builders Cup Career Mode where players will compete with over 500 cars across 20 tracks that have been faithfully recreated.
Forza Motorsport is slated to release on October 10th for Xbox Series X|S and PC (via Steam).
Sonic Superstars
Sonic Superstars is a brand-new take on the 2D Sonic formula. Players can play as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose solo or with up to three other players as they take on Dr. Eggman to save the day once again.
The game takes the same formula fans have grown to love and enhances with new abilities and powers thanks to the use of the chaos emeralds that’ll allow players to swim up waterfalls, changes forms, and multiply.
Sonic Superstars will launch for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via Steam).
Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged
The sequel to the surprise hit for the Hot Wheels franchise, Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged aims even higher than its predecessor with over 130 vehicles that expand beyond standard cars with monster trucks, motorbikes, and ATVs.
There are also five new locations to race in that adds in new gameplay elements in terrains that’ll make players adapt based on how their vehicles races over them. Of course all these new features will be included in the customization feature where players can create their own tracks to race on.
Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged launches for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store).
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
The newest game in the ever popular Spider-Man comic franchise, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the sequel to developer Insomniac Games’ take on the web-slinging hero.
In this title, players will be able to swap between playing as the legendary Peter Parker or more recent newcomer Miles Morales as they experience separate stories with their different powers while facing off iconic villain Venom.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launches exclusively for PlayStation 5 for October 20th.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder
After months of teases during the lead up to the film earlier this year, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is ready to grace the world yet again with more Mario platforming goodness.
This new entry mixes things up with the addition of new powers such as giving him and his friends the form of an elephant. Meanwhile the Wonder Flower will provide unexpected experiences each time its touched throughout the game.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder will launch exclusively for Nintendo Switch on October 20th.
Cities: Skylines II
The sequel to one of the biggest city builders of all time is here with Cities: Skylines II. Players will be able to expand on the fun they had in the previous entry with less limitations on their world-building with deeper simulations.
Beyond just laying out the groundwork of the city, players will have to contend with managing a living economy and adjust their plans as the seasons change. All this along with better mod support will allow the community to let their imagination run wild.
Cities: Skylines II comes out on October 24th for PC (via Steam).
The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria
Gollum wasn’t the only game based on the iconic Lord of the Rings franchise with Return to Moria giving the series’ take on the survival crafting genre. As the name suggests, players will be able to explore the home of Moria under the Misty Mountains in this expansion of the universe.
As expected from survival crafting titles, players will explore the procedurally generated mines of Moria, build bases, tools, and weapons, and mine resources either solo or with their friends.
The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria will release on October 24th for PlayStation 5 and PC (via Epic Games Store).
Ghostrunner II
Set one year after its predecessor, Ghostrunner II brings even more high octane action to the cyberpunk styled franchise as protagonist Jack returns to take on an AI cult that threatens humanity.
Action is dialed up to eleven in this installment with new skills that allow players to take on encounters in creative ways as well as nonlinear motorbike sections that’ll mix things up beyond cutting through dozens of foes, which is still heavily featured in this game.
Ghostrunner II releases for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store) on October 26th.
Alan Wake II
After over a decade since the cliffhanger ending of the first game, Alan Wake II will hopefully give fans the closure they’ve been waiting for so long on. The story follows not only titular character Alan Wake, but newcomer Saga Anderson where the pair become intertwined.
With a string of ritualistic murder threatening Bright Falls, Anderson is sent in to solve the case. However it appears this case is tied to Alan Wake as he desperately tries to rewrite reality to escape his fate in the dark place. Will they be able to stand up to the horrors that await them?
Alan Wake II is set to release for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via Epic Games Store).
CRYMACHINA
CRYMACHINA is an action RPG set in a post-apocalyptic world where mechanical girls strikes to become “real humans”. In a tale reminiscence of Pinocchio, players will be able to customize their gear to face challenging foes.
Despite its grim setting, the game promotes itself as a heartwarming tale where players will be able to learn more about the girls between the tough combat sequences. As if perhaps they are becoming “real humans”, but will they?
CRYMACHINA is set to launch on October 25th for PC (via Steam).
