Next Steam Update Adds Native Support for Xbox and Generic Controllers for All Games

While we previously reported on Valve adding support for non-Steam controllers like the DualShock 4, the company has now added native support for Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Generic X-Input controllers to the Steam beta client. This means you can use any third-party X-Input controller on any Steam game, and this includes third party PlayStation 4 pads, even fight sticks.

“Added Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Generic X-Input controller configurator support,” the patch notes for the latest Steam client beta read. “This allows all recognized controller types to use the advanced mapping features of the Steam Controller Configurator.”

“Note that because X-Input currently lacks per-controller means of unique identification, all controllers of that type will share personalization and configuration settings. As they share the same inputs, Xbox 360/One/Generic controllers will all see each-others configurations when browsing. Automatic conversion will be attempted when loading configurations from other controller types.”

This is a welcome change as many users have been wanting to use third-party, PlayStation 4-controllers with Steam’s built-in controller mapper, over Xbox One or Xbox 360 controllers (which are natively supported in Windows).

A date for when the new controller support will enter full release was not given, but it took roughly a month for DualShock 4 support to enter full release. We’ll keep you guys posted.
