We have learned the title of the next Pokemon movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back EVOLUTION.

In addition to a single image teaser as shown above (which appears to be in CG), the film will release in Japan on July 12th 2019. It will be directed by Kunihiko Yuyama (director of many Pokemon movies) and Motonori Sakakibara (Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, Rudolf the Black Cat).

The screenplay will be provided by by Takeshi Shudo, who was the writer of Pokemon: Mewtwo Return; as well as the chief writer for the Pokemon anime during the Kanto, Orange Islands, and Johto arcs.

While an obvious callback to the original Mewtwo Strikes Back movie, the recent films have been following their own continuity separate from the anime since Pokemon: I Choose You.

This is not the first time the new-continuity has borrowed from films and anime episodes of old. Elements in Pokemon: I Choose You were certainly inspired by Mewtwo Strikes Back (which we will not post- spoilers!), and the last film Power of Us features Lugia prominently, who debuted in Power of One.

Whether this film will be a full blown remake or something new remains to be seen. We will keep you guys posted.
