While many zombie survival games have come and gone recently, they tend to be largely the same. Even some that aren’t strictly zombie survival have joined in the fun. Between DayZ, Rust, Dead Frontier and State of Decay largely have the same features overall. Of course there are some changes between them, especially graphically.
However, a new game on KickStarter right now is adding some fun new features to the mix that could shake things up. Survive, much like many of the other games, is a first person zombie survival game in which the player must survive through gathering things, killing zombies, making friends with other players online or npc survivors, and whatever else you may need to do to not die. However, some of the features that the creator, David Tse, wishes to incorporate are a really fresh take on the genre.
First and foremost, probably the coolest feature he wants to add is the ability to start in your own house. Or at least a 3d generated model of it. He plans to include a simple 2d blueprint editor for some backers that will allow them to construct their own house to try to survive in.
But some of the other features are awesome too. The ability to start the game whenever you want in relation to the apocalypse is one such feature. Starting the game just before and watching the whole procedural world go to hell in a handbasket is one thing you simply can’t do with most games – at least not ones without a set storyline. Or you can start 10 years after and try to scrounge up what you need to survive that way.
And that last point brought up another awesome little tidbit – the whole world here is procedural. I believe a true procedural open world zombie game is something yet to be available, so it’s a welcome change for the genre. And really, these features aren’t even everything he listed off.
