Alongside a bevy of new details revealed today for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the game’s bold new “World of Light” adventure mode.
Featured in the above trailer, the new mode is basically a greatly expanded single-player adventure mode that takes a few cues from Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War, quite literally in fact.
Towards the middle of the cutscene you see the entire roster seemingly obliterated by an encroaching evil – with Kirby surviving (because he’s too pure and one of Nintendo’s best characters), only to later be tasked with unlocking the other characters as you go.
The overworld you’ll explore and battle through is basically the Nintendo equivalent of Kingdom Hearts, i.e. it combines worlds based on all the franchises included in the game. There will be lots of playable stages, puzzles, and various fights included – as well as voice acting.
As you progress and unlock the other characters, you can even level up and customize characters via a new skill tree system that looks reminiscent of Final Fantasy X‘s Sphere Grid.
It’s worth pointing out that the base roster of unlocked characters in the game will mirror the original Super Smash Bros. roster, i.e. the one from Nintendo 64. You have to unlock everyone else.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is launching on December 7th for the Nintendo Switch.
