New Trailer Released For Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway

Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway

Sunrise have released a new trailer for the first part of their upcoming anime movie trilogy, Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway.

Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway is the first part in a trilogy of movie adaptations based on Yoshiyuki Tomino’s Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash novel series from 1989. Much like the original novels, Hathaway is set in U.C. 0105, 12 years after the events of Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack.

More specifically, the novel’s timeline is based on the events depicted in Beltorchika’s Children, Tomino’s novelization of Char’s Counterattack; which features some events and outcomes that differ from the movie version of the story.

Regardless of the differences in timelines and events, Hathaway’s Flash serves as a final closing chapter in the decades-long conflict between Char, Amuro, the ideals they represent, and an establishing point for some of the later U.C. storylines that saw the Earth Federation continue to stagnate and decay in the face of new empires and rebel factions rising throughout the solar system.

The events of the film take place five years after the Republic of Zeon surrendered their autonomy and came back under the control of the Earth Federation; an event that many hoped would finally bring peace after decades of devastating wars and sporadic skirmishes.

However, the Federation used this power gap to become more totalitarian as they attempted to consolidate their power on Earth, notably by forcibly relocating political dissidents and other undesirables to space so they could turn Earth into a prosperous home for the ruling elite. A terrorist organization named Mafty soon rises to oppose the Federation.

Hathaway Noa, the son of the famed Federation captain Bright Noa, has been missing since the events of the Second Neo Zeon War. Haunted by his memories of the conflict, and the death of the young Newtype Quess Paraya, Hathaway finds a new purpose in life. He assumes the alias Mafty Navue Erin, and becoming the leader of Mafty in their insurgency campaign against the Earth Federation.

You can find the new trailer below.

The movie was originally set to release in July of 2020, but was delayed due to ongoing concerns over COVID-19. Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway‘s currently scheduled to get a nationwide theatrical release in Japan on May 7th, 2021.
