Sega have teased a new Sonic the Hedgehog game for 2022 during the Sonic Central livestream, and as part of the series’ 30th anniversary.
Details are scant, but we do see Sonic running through a forest, leaving a pixelated and digital energy in his wake. He then creates an inverted and rotated number 6, which pans back into the above symbol; starting on stone with tribal markings before turning into metal.
While fans may be hoping for a return to the Adventure style games, it may be too soon to say that will be the case purely due to the presence of trees and tribal imagery. If anything, the digital and cybernetic imagery is more prevalent.
Shadow the Hedgehog featured Shadow entering cyberspace in some levels, and Sonic Colors had the “Sonic Simulator” for multiplayer modes. Techno Base and Cyber Track also featured in Sonic Advance 2 and 3; and both featured cyberspace designs.
What is curious is Sonic seems to be running through his real world, yet is producing this digital effect as he runs. Is he trapped in a virtual world? Has he gained new powers allowing him to interface with technology and machines? Going frame-by-frame, Sonic seems his usual (modern) self; bar the turquoise glow.
The above symbol may also become stylized text; and part of the game’s name. Even so, other than the far right symbol being a “p”, the left may have other elements missing.
Others have proposed since Sonic runs in the number 6 shape, that the game will be a remake of the disastrous Sonic the Hedgehog (2006); dubbed Sonic 06 by the fans. However, such heavy reworking of the plot and gameplay would effectively be a new game, thereby not needing the reputation of the original weighing it down.
Before the trailer is introduced, we also hear what could be the opening to Sonic Boom (albeit with no bass); the opening for the western version of Sonic CD. However, that game’s opening animation started on an open field with prominent mountainous pillars.
