Square Enix has confirmed a new SaGa series package release is in development, and they hope to reveal it sometime in 2022.
The confirmation that a new SaGa series package release is in development came from the SaGa series producers talk 2021 livestream (via Games Jouhou), where both Hiroyuki Miura (producer on Collection of SaGa: Final Fantasy Legend and SaGa Frontier Remastered) and SaGa series general director Akitoshi Kawazu talked up the new game.
“We are still developing the title, and we hope to announce it somewhere next year, so please look forward to it.” Miura said. “We are still developing the title, and we hope to announce it somewhere next year.”
Kawazu quickly added, “Miura-san, myself and others are working on the next package title, so please look forward to the Saga series next year. The new title will be a package title, not an operational title.”
It’s worth noting while Kawazu’s follow-up comment expands on what Miura suggested, which sounded like it could have been a totally new SaGa series game. Instead, Kawazu confirmed it’s a “package” title, which will probably be similar to the Collection of SaGa: Final Fantasy Legend release, which contained all three Final Fantasy Legend games.
This could be a new packaged re-release for the original three Romancing SaGa titles, considering only Romancing SaGa 2 and Romancing SaGa 3 have been re-released on modern platforms. The original Romancing SaGa is still only available on the Super Famicom or the PlayStation 2 (and other older platforms).
Collection of SaGa: Final Fantasy Legend has been available since December 2020 and SaGa Frontier Remastered has been available since April 2021 – you can find our review for the latter here.
