New Punch Line Trailer Shows Off More Insanity

5pb. has shared the latest trailer for their upcoming Punch Line game at this year’s Tokyo Game Show.

Featured above, the new trailer shows off the game’s characters (and their voice actors), its puzzle and dialogue mechanics, and more. Punch Line follows the same premise as the anime/manga original, which had a story penned by Kotaro Uchikoshi, the creator of the Zero Escape series.

Just like the anime original, you’ll play as Yūta Iridatsu, a high schooler that is mysteriously ejected from his body. While in spirit form, you’ll be guided by your cat spirit Chiranosuke, as you try to sneak pranks on unsuspecting women.

The reward here is leveling up and progressing the story, however, should you see the ladies unmentionables twice, you’ll destroy the entire world. Fans can expect 10 new episodes over the series existing 12 episodes.

Punch Line is launching for both PlayStation 4 and PS Vita in Japan sometime this winter.

I still don’t get what Kotaro Uchikoshi was trying to do with this series. Even Dio from VLR was more likeable than the cast from Punch Line. The ending was pretty cool though.

I haven’t watched it because I found it real fuckin’ weird for a dude who made a mostly mature game would do something involving ghosts seeing lady undergarments.

Like what the shit, I have him friended on Facebook too and he never seemed keen on holding a convo about it when his fans post on his wall. But if you tell him about Zero Escape he gushes about how happy he is.

It seems like he got shafted and did his honest to God best job he can given what he was given to work with but I dunno.

    Is it even worth watching?

What, he can’t have a moment to make something that’s not serious?

He can, shit, Zero Escape was riddled with them.

The point was is that he didn’t seem happy that he made it. Like he wasn’t satisfied with what he wrote.

Of course this is only a theory because he avoids the Hell out of Punchline conversations on Facebook but jumps on Zero Escape and Ever 17 like crazy.

The plot is a copy of VLR. Time travelling shenanigans, even the purpose and mechanics of how the main dude does it is the same. First 6 episodes are a run of a video game, showing a normal run of the game where everyone dies. First 3 episodes are the tutorial of how the ghost man works, with rules that even sound out of a game.
7-10 are the same first 6 episodes with more information thrown out. Last 2 episodes are a pretty good conclusion that tie everything together.

So the plot seems like a Uchiokishi game but without any of the themes, gameplay or thought put into how it fits into anime.

The biggest problem is the shitty characters, the girls don’t go beyond plot device or one trait like, she’s the drunky or she’s a hacker. Main guy doesn’t work like Sigma or Junpei and the “twist” they give him is superfluous (He’s a boy ghost in the body of a girl). He also tries having the cast disagree like in the games, but it never goes farther than an episode.

So the characters are stereotypical, and any attempts at making them like Uchiokishi characters is undemrined by the plot or that we don’t give s hit about them.

The fanservice stuff also gets phased out, is worthless overall and while he may have been trying to deconstruct fanservice, due to it causing the end of the world, it just ends up being gratuitous fanservice that eats up time. Hell the series ends up on a panty shot.

There’s also a tonal dissonance, the show goes serious sometimes, but is impossible to take seriously, because I never gave a shit about anyone. The comedy comes of as lol randum and Japanese puns.

The animation is really nice at the very least but that may be because the characters talk all the time they could save up for a few action scenes.

He has a history of rehashing the same story elements (and plot) in his works repeatedly so this makes sense.

It’s interesting you say that since I found VLR to be an awful mess and waste of my time, but the one redeeming thing about it was the characters (aside from Egyptian retcon) and their interactions. If Punchline is like VLR but without that charisma then….oof

Yech. Yeah in general I am annoyed by fanservice so I’ll give it a pass. THanks for the heads up.

I suppose it kinda looks interesting.

The characters in Punch Line can be described as:
    – Exposition cat
    – Drunk girl
    – Robot girl
    – Happy girl
    – Hikkikomori girl
    – Angry Antagonist
    – Exposition dumped protagonist

Still I played VLR after watching the show and if I’d done the opposite, I would’ve thought less of the show. I do hope Uchiokishi gets some new ideas for the third game and this was a one-off. Still if you thought the concepts were muddled in VLR Punch Line has genetically engineered bears, mechas, robot girls, ghosts, super saiyans, fortune-telling, meteorites, scientology analogues, the USA army invading a Japanese house, super heroes, a squid stealth suit, a dance based on putting a pigeon head on your face, super sentai, a ghost cat and panty shots that will destroy the world.

That sounds legitimately crap. Wow, yeah this show is NOT for me.
I agree too, I hope he’s got all the really mind-confused wacky stuff out with this and ZE3 gets a more mature and less muddled story.

Nope, it’s a dumbed down retread of VLR with awfully bland characters.

Fans can expect 10 new episodes over the series existing 12 episodes.

Does that mean that, Punch Line is getting another Season?
