Are you an indie developer with a game too weird or risky to get funding from the mainstream? You might want to try Pantaloon, a new indie publisher looking for exactly the type of games too weird for the mainstream.
At least, that’s the pitch by Pantaloon founder Jamin Smith, whose past resume includes being the brand manager at Square Enix, marketing director at Modern Wolf, and more. The team at Pantaloon is seeking objectively niche games that don’t fit the mainstream mold.
“Our vision is built off a different set of principles,” Smith said in a press release. “With an existing awareness platform and terms that give novel agency and security to development partners, we seek to actively court risk, finding peculiar or experimental games that can chart unexplored or choppy genre-waters.”
It seems that Pantaloon is actively searching for interested indie developers as of the time of writing. Most of the front page of the website, as well as the about is devoted to guidance to game developers who think Pantaloon might be a good fit for their game. So far, they have four games lined up: Acolyte, Sub-Verge, Occlude, and Puzzletrunk.
Pantaloon’s announcement has been greeted with a mixture of excitement and cautious optimism. Many indie studios have unfortunately been shuttered in recent years due to bad business choices of their patent corporations. Still, others have thrived, especially those who have not let themselves be bought out by larger studios, so hopefully Pantaloon is here to stay.
