Alongside the news that Naughty Dog and Sony are finally releasing the remaining Jak and Daxter games for PlayStation 4, buried at the bottom of their presser was something probably cooler:
Both parties collaborated with design studio Truant Pixel in re-creating the bootup sound, animations, menu, OS sounds, and so on from the original PlayStation 2 operating system and user interface.
You read that right – if Sony’s second-generation game console was practically your religion and its noises instantly tap into that subconscious part of your brain, you should hit play on the above video.
The new theme makes use of high-quality samples recorded from the PlayStation 2 hardware and recreated faithfully alongside all the signature UI features like the “seven stars” (which cycle infinitely once generated) and the Crystal Clock (which actually shows the local time).
Due to licensing issues, the original PlayStation 2 logo can’t be used during the theme’s boot up sequence, however, the developer included a mid-boot easter egg that changes randomly each login.
Truant Pixel is releasing the theme next week on December 6th, for $2.99.
