Square Enix confirms new Just Cause title in development

After the lukewarm release of Just Cause 4 back in 2018, the franchise has been laying mostly dormant – until now, as we’ve learned a new Just Cause game is being made.

As revealed in an investor briefing back in May 2022, Square Enix revealed another Just Cause title is in the works. The publisher noted “the Just Cause franchise will remain our IP, and we are at work developing a new title in the franchise.”

It may be easy to assume they had sold off Just Cause back when they sold off many western studios to Embracer group, thereby selling IPs of huge franchises like Tomb Raider and Deus Ex. However, they do not own developer Avalanche Studios, so that company was not sold off.

Avalanche Studios’ also has a job listing for a senior producer to join their team as they “are crafting” their “next cutting-edge AAA open-world game”. Given the above tease from Square Enix, this likely means the original developers for the series are hard at work with the next title.

While the franchise has been quiet lately on the gaming front. There was a mobile game, which has seemingly been delayed, as well as a movie with John Wick creator Derek Kolstad coming in on the project.
