New Jersey man tries to kill rival over an argument in ArcheAge MMO

ArcheAge attack

In a strange twist of the ongoing “Florida Man” myth, a New Jersey man was arrested in Florida for trying to murder a rival in the long-running MMORPG ArcheAge.

According to a police report, Edward Kang, 20 years of age, flew from Newark to Jacksonville, Florida and proceeded to drive to Ferdandina Beach where he attacked his victim, about the same age and sex as Kang, with a hammer in his home.

“I just want to let you know, this is a weird one,” Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper said about the incident on a news conference Monday. “Some things you just can’t make up.”

However, the victim’s relatives were able to fight off the attacker, dressed in all black. The victim was injured in the head but has been out of the hospital at the time of writing.

Police deduced that the attack began over an argument in XLGAMES’ ArcheAge, a Korean MMORPG released in 2013 (and is ending in June 2024). Edward Kang accused the victim of being “a bad person online”, though however Kang acquired the victim’s address is still being investigated.

Sheriff Leeper added, “I would say Mr. Kang, it’s going to be a long time before you play video games again.” Kang has no attorney listed yet and his being held without bond.
