Normally, I don’t find Steam Greenlight notices to be very interesting, since most of the indie games being “allowed” onto the service seem to be derivatives of other indie games. This is not the case with Skyhill, a quirky-looking RPG that just hit the service today.
If you’re old enough to have played Elevator Action, this game comes across as a Frankenstein cross-breed between that and Fallout. It’s looking pretty spooky, too, with some real Texas Chainsaw Massacre-esque character designs and a Micheal Douglas Falling Down vibe to it. If any indie title gets my cash on Steam in the upcoming year, it has to be this one.
A short blurb from the developer should give you an idea what to expect:
«Skyhill» is a roguelike story about staying alive when there is no reason to.
You are a resident of Skyhill hotel, who survived biological catastrophe. Goal: get out of your penthouse in search of other people and salvation. But all elevators in the building are off and floors are flooded with hazards.
You are not sure whether there are any other survivors. As far as you know, everyone in the building died, or … changed beyond recognition. Those who provided room service and pushed buttons in elevators for you not so long ago … they now all want to rip off your flesh to get to your tasty insides … So much for customer service.
You face the dilemma: on the one hand, you have to get out from the damn building, and on the other hand, your hotel suite is your only “fort” that protects from the horrors of post-apocalyptic reality.
The game won “Most promising game in development” at the Indie Prize Casual Connect 2014 in Belgrade. Though no concrete date is set for release, it’s a title I plan to keep my eye on.
