We’ve gotten a rare look at one of the prototype versions of Earthbound 64, or as it was known in Japan – Mother 3.

New footage of the Nintendo 64 prototype of the game has been recently uncovered by Japanese YouTube channel kukun kun, from Nintendo’s 1996 SpaceWorld showcase event.

Here’s a look at the footage, which starts around the 10:41 mark:

Previously, it had been thought the first time the Nintendo 64 prototype of the game was shown off publicly was in 1999, we now know the company had been showing it off earlier.

The game was supposed to be released for the console on a 256-megabit cartridge, just like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Unfortunately, the game was cancelled in 2000 as Nintendo focused on the GameCube, only to be later re-announced for the Game Boy Advance.

Despite having been in development since the Super Famicom back in 1994, Mother 3 has never released outside of Japan.
