Square Enix have revealed new screenshots and information about Final Fantasy VII Remake.
While a lot of this was information we have known from past trailers and interviews, some new pieces and specifics have come to light. The blog focused on members of Avalanche, the Turks, the upgrade system, new Materia, menus, minigames, and locations.
Here’s the full rundown:
First, the blogpost focused on Avalanche’s three non-major character members; Biggs, Jessie, and Wedge.
Biggs is calm, cool and collected, even in the most extreme circumstances. He’s tidy by nature, and loves nothing more than cleaning and taking a shower.
Jessie is in charge of procurement for Avalanche. She can get her hands on everything from explosives to fake IDs. She’s also a skilled engineer, and earns money for the group by fixing water filtration units and devices to sell on. She does have a weakness for handsome men though…
Wedge is an invaluable member of Avalanche, who uses his wits and charm for to gather information and defuse tense situations – including those within the team. He also has another very important role – he tastes new menu items in Seventh Heaven. Well, someone’s got to do it, right?
Next, the blog posts discussed two of the Turks- Shinra’s enforcers. “The shadowy group does everything the company needs it to – be it scouting out candidates for SOLDIER, protecting VIPs, or even assassination. Here’s a look at a couple of them.” The post briefly discusses Reno and Rude.
Reno has flaming red hair and a cynical, aloof attitude. In battle, his agility and specialized weaponry and attacks make him a real threat.
Rude is instantly recognizable thanks to his shaved head, sunglasses and imposing stature. A man of few words, he relies on martial arts and his strength in battle, and completes missions as efficiently as possible.
The post then moved onto the battle system, explaining how each character has a unique ability. Cloud can switch between two modes, Operator and Punisher. Operator offers a balance of attack and speed, while Punisher has increased damage at the cost of movement speed.
Screenshots of Cloud’s Triple Slash and Blade Burst attacks were also shown.
Classic Mode was also shown to be within the difficulty menu. The Mode will have characters perform basic attacks manually, and players can have more “strategic control” over when to execute special attacksl akin to the original RPG.
Curiously, this means the mode itself does not offer alternate difficulties- with the menu noting the difficulty is the same as that on Easy. This menu also may indicate the player can change the difficulty at any time.
Focusing on environmental screenshots, the post then showed how the church, and Aerith’s home look.
Attention then returned to gameplay, focusing on Materia. These crystals spheres will allow characters to cast magic and use other special abilities, such as Fire and Assess.
In addition, weapons have “Core Materia” that can be upgraded to increase a weapon’s power. Briefly discussing weapons, the blog post then explains how using weapons will increase their innate ability, granting them more bonuses. Once a weapon is mastered, this ability can be used with any weapon.
A new summon was also revealed- one not present in the original game. Chocobo & Moogle will attack foes with Blast (Moogle using a blast of magical energy) and Stampede (several Chocobo overrunning your enemies).
Finally some other activities in the game were detailed. These include playing darts at Seventh Heaven (Tifa’s bar), and “bike battles” against Shinra soldiers.
The fact these are mentioned in the same segment may indicate the later is just as replayable as the first. In the original game, the bike sequence was just one part of the Midgar section of the story, before returning as a minigame in the Golden Saucer.
Final Fantasy VII Remake is launching for PlayStation 4 on March 3, 2020.
