Square Enix have released new screenshots and details for their upcoming “full-scale, high-quality RPG” for mobile devices, Mevius Final Fantasy.

The protagonist wakes up in a strange and foreboding world—apparently this world still has moogles, however—to be guided by an entity known only as “Voice” (the origin of which is perhaps pictured below, in the crystal).

The game’s controls will be simple and optimized for smartphones. Movement will be automatic, and a basic “fight” command will be carried out by tapping the screen.

Battles will consist of standard attacks, magic, and abilities, with players being able to attack multiple times per turn. Among the spells available to the player is Flame Blast, a magic which wreathes the protagonist’s sword in flame.

Defeating enemies will net “Elements”, which will in turn unlock abilities.

This game will make use of Final Fantasy‘s job system. Each job will change the attacks and abilities available to the player, which will hopefully introduce some strategy into the gameplay. Two of these jobs have been revealed thus far: the Ranger job equips the protagonist with two daggers, speed, and powerful close-range attacks; and as the Black Mage, the protagonist has low health and weak physical attacks, but excels at magic and critical strikes.

More info, screenshots, and art for the game can be found here.

Mevius Final Fantasy is scheduled to release on Android and iOS mobile devices some time this year. Although Square Enix are aiming to provide graphics not yet seen on phones, they say they are also trying to optimize the game so that it’s playable on as many different mobile devices as possible.
