Never Alone, also known as Kisima Inŋitchuŋ, is a very unique game, for one it’s the first game that is being developed alongside the wisdom and cultural input of Native Alaskans, but it also brims with lore and culture that is normally passed down from generation to generation via word of mouth.
The game is a puzzle platformer, and it showcases the lore of the Iñupiat people and tries to focus on the importance of instilling wisdom from the elders to the new generations. The game itself takes place “in a place where survival shouldn’t be possible.” The experience that is being prepared is poised to explore the meaning of what being human truly is, as well as the folklore that has been handed down for generations.
The narrator in the video, speaking in their native tongue, is already waxing a fascinating story:
“For thousands of years, we told stories from one generation to the next. Our stories help us to understand how the world is ordered and our place within it. But what good are old stories if the wisdom they contain is not shared? That’s why we’re making this game … We have so much to share and now we have a way to share it.”
Never Alone is set for a release this fall across PC, Playstation 4, and Xbox One.
