Netflix has ordered the production of an anime series based off the sci-fi franchise The Terminator. The series will be produced in conjunction with Skydance Media.
Originally reported by Variety, Netflix has also brought the animation studio Production I.G. on board. Production I.G. is known for their past work such as the 1995 Ghost in the Shell film and 2002 series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.
The Terminator is a media franchise that began in 1984 with the titular film The Terminator; the film was directed by James Cameron and starred Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Since then, The Terminator franchise has gone on to include multiple installments which have released as recently as 2019. The upcoming anime series will be the latest installment to the franchise after Terminator: Dark Fate.
The franchise follows the conflict between man and machine after the unified SAC-NORAD government organization activates the Skynet artificial intelligence. The franchise makes heavy use of time travel as a plot device. The first film features Skynet and the human resistance led by John Connor sending agents from 2029 to 1984 to kill and protect Connor’s mother from an untimely death respectively.
At the time of publishing not much is known about the upcoming anime project or at what point in the franchise’s timeline it takes place in.
