Need for Speed Heat Adds Cross Play Support June 9th, New Game Announcement Teased by Criterion Games

Need for Speed

Criterion Games have announced they will be bringing cross play support to Need for Speed Heat, along with hinting at a new Need for Speed game. (Thanks Nibellion!)

The news comes via a news post on the Need for Speed Heat official website, from Criterion Games General Manager Matt Webster. In his post he discusses an upcoming update to Need for Speed Heat, as well as hinting at the next Need for Speed game.

First, Need for Speed Heat will add cross play on June 9th between Windows PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The game had recently come to Steam alongside many other Origin-exclusive games.

“You can search for your friends who are playing on any of the above systems,” Webster explains, “given they’ve opted in for cross-play as well, inside the Find Players menu. Then, go to the new EA Friends tab in the Party Menu to see who’s online to play with.” You can find the full update notes here.

Next, Need for Speed Heat will become available via EA Access and the Origin Access Basic Vault. The game will come to both subscription services on June 16th.

Finally, while discussing the desire to “connect our players and games on more platforms,” Webster asked readers to “keep an eye out at EA PLAY Live on June 18 for more Need for Speed and Steam announcements. Cross-play will work across PC via Origin and Steam, PS4, Xbox One, and subscribers.”

This would seem to hint at a new Need for Speed game being announced. The franchise has released a new game every one to two years. As such, any game announced during EA Play Live will likely launch in 2021 (though there have been three year gaps before, and circumstances can change release dates).

We previously reported that EA Play Live had been postponed, due to the aftermath of the death of George Floyd.

Need for Speed Heat is available on Windows PC (via Steam), PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
