Naoki Urasawa’s Monster anime getting western Blu-ray release in 2026

Monster anime

Discotek Media has announced they’re bringing Naoki Urasawa’s legendary horror/thriller Monster anime westward, in its remastered Blu-ray release.

The Monster anime is getting a western Blu-ray release with all 74 episodes, with both Japanese audio and English subtitles, as well as an English dub. A release is set for sometime in 2026.

This is the first time the remastered version of the Monster anime is released outside of Japan as previously the series was only released on DVD via Viz Media, who later dropped the series mid-release due to low sales. The series has been broadcasted in the west via Syfy’s old Ani-Monday block, and is currently available to stream on Netflix (both the standard definition version, not the remaster).

Originally released in 2004 and based on Urasawa’s manga of the same name, Monster was produced by famed animation studio MADHOUSE and directed by Masayuki Kojima (Made in Abyss). The story follows Kenzo Tenma, a Japanese surgeon living in Düsseldorf, Germany whose life is thrown upside down when he gets involved with Johan Liebert, one of his former patients, who is discovered to be a nihilistic sociopath and serial killer.

I’ve known about Naoki Urasawa from wanting to finally check out his legendary Master Keaton series, though I somehow never heard of Monster. I’m always a fan of horror and thriller so this is naturally a must-see, and this is the first time the series is being released in its complete form in the west.
